- Gerald Michael Cushing Fitzgerald, s.P. (October 29, 1894 in Framingham, Massachusetts – June 28, 1969) was an American Catholic priest known for founding the Congregation of the Servants of the Paraclete, which operates centers for priests dealing with challenges such as alcoholism, substance abuse and sexual misconduct. He began his ministry as a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston and later became a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross. In 2009 his papers were unsealed. He had asked American bishops and the Vatican in the 1950s and 1960s to not reassign priests who sexually assaulted parishioners. He said that they were effectively untreatable and at risk of committing additional sex crimes and tarnishing the church's reputation. Fitzgerald argued so forcefully for the defrocking (i.e. forced dismissal from the priesthood) of sexually abusive priests that it has been argued that the Catholic hierarchy would have been made aware of the dangers of allowing such priests to return to parish work where they would have contact with minors. Iniziò il suo ministero presso l'Arcidiocesi di Boston. Ha fondato la congregazione dei Servi del Paraclito. Nel 2009 le sue lettere scritte ai superiori vennero rese pubbliche. Grazie a quegli scritti si apprese che negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta egli chiese ai vescovi americani e al Vaticano di non riassegnare alle parrocchie quei sacerdoti rei di avere commesso abusi sessuali. A tal proposito sostenne che tali sacerdoti non erano più meritevoli di fiducia e rappresentavano un rischio se rimessi nelle condizioni di commettere ulteriori crimini sessuali, e quindi di macchiare ulteriormente la reputazione della chiesa. Fitzgerald argomentò così energicamente le sue tesi per ottenere le dimissioni dallo stato clericale di quei sacerdoti, sessualmente pericolosi, che i tribunali con cause pendenti per accertare reati sessuali verso minori ritennero che la gerarchia cattolica doveva ritenersi informata rispetto ai pericoli potenziali derivanti dal permettere a tali sacerdoti di tornare al lavoro parrocchiale, a contatto con i minori.
