George William Odlum (1934 - 2003) was a politician and newspaper proprietor from Saint Lucia. He had degrees from the Universities of Oxford and Bristol.

  • George William Odlum (1934 - 2003) was a politician and newspaper proprietor from Saint Lucia. He had degrees from the Universities of Oxford and Bristol. While attending the latter he served as president of the university's student union and appeared in the first production of Harold Pinter's debut play, The Room. He was a member of the Saint Lucia Labour Party and served as foreign minister of Saint Lucia from 1979 until 1981 and from 1997 until 2001. He was also Saint Lucia's Ambassador to the United Nations from 1994-97 (?) Odlum, who owned and edited a socialist newspaper called The Crusader for many years until his death, was one of the most vocal socialist politicians in Saint Lucia and in the Caribbean. He was a friend of Maurice Bishop, Fidel Castro and Muammar al-Gaddafi. He often criticized leaders of his own party such as Allan Louisy and Kenny Anthony for not supporting the masses enough. He was fired from his position as foreign minister both times for such comments. Odlum fought for higher wages for agricultural workers, particularly during the 1970s. Among his achievements was the establishment of relations between Saint Lucia and China. He was also one of "four musketeers" of the region. The name given to a left-wing group which, apart from Odlum, included Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, Rosie Douglas and Tim Hector. Known as "Brother George" to his supporters, Odlum died on 28 September 2003 of pancreatic cancer. He was survived by three daughters, three sons, an adopted daughter and several brothers and sisters. He was also father-in-law of Pan-African activitist and filmmaker Owen 'Alik Shahadah. The debating chamber of the University of Bristol Union student council has been renamed the George Odlum Room in the memory of "Brother George". (en)

Participó en dos ocasiones como Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores en el gobierno de la isla; primero en 1979 para formar el primer gobierno de Santa Lucía como país independiente y después en 1997 bajo la administración de Kenneth Anthony. Odlum también ocupó el cargo de Embajador ante la Organización de las Naciones Unidas consiguiendo el establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas con la República Popular China. Debido a su ideología radical, en varias ocasiones rompió con los laboristas; primero para formar el efímero Partido Laboral Progresista y después para participar en las elecciones del 3 de diciembre de 2001 bajo la plataforma de la Alianza Nacional. Sus conflictos con el ex primer ministro conservador John Compton le impidieron consolidar un bloque opositor con el Partido Unido de los Trabajadores y al final Alianza Nacional sólo consiguió el 3,5% de los votos. Fuera de la política Odlum era un actor reconocido a nivel local y también era dueño de un periódico, The Crusader. Tras una larga batalla contra el cáncer de páncreas Odlum falleció la mañana del domingo 28 de septiembre de 2003. Como señal de duelo la bandera de Santa Lucía ondeó a media asta en los días posteriores. (es)
