- GPFS (General Parallel File System, brand name IBM Spectrum Scale) is high-performance clustered file system software developed by IBM. It can be deployed in shared-disk or shared-nothing distributed parallel modes, or a combination of these. It is used by many of the world's largest commercial companies, as well as some of the supercomputers on the Top 500 List.For example, it is the filesystem of the Summitat Oak Ridge National Laboratory which was the #1 fastest supercomputer in the world in the November 2019 TOP500 list of supercomputers. Summit is a 200 Petaflops system composed of more than 9,000 POWER9 processors and 27,000 NVIDIA Volta GPUs. The storage filesystem called Alpine has 250 PB of storage using Spectrum Scale on IBM ESS storage hardware, capable of approximately 2.5TB/s of sequential I/O and 2.2TB/s of random I/O. Like typical cluster filesystems, GPFS provides concurrent high-speed file access to applications executing on multiple nodes of clusters. It can be used with AIX clusters, Linux clusters, on Microsoft Windows Server, or a heterogeneous cluster of AIX, Linux and Windows nodes running on x86, Power or IBM Z processor architectures. In addition to providing filesystem storage capabilities, it provides tools for management and administration of the GPFS cluster and allows for shared access to file systems from remote clusters. - Le General Parallel File System (GPFS) est un système de fichiers conçu pour adresser de façon unique des volumes de données dépassant le pétaoctet et répartis sur un nombre de supports physiques pouvant dépasser le millier. Conçu par IBM qui le rend public en 1998, GPFS est disponible pour des clusters d'ordinateurs fonctionnant sous AIX, Linux et Windows Server 2003. GPFS reprend les techniques classiques du RAID (striping d'une part et tolérance de panne par redondance d'autre part) et s'accède par ethernet. Il autorise également la réplication et journalise les accès en écriture (permettant de reprendre plus vite un état stable après un incident quelconque) sont intégrées aux méthodes d'accès elles-mêmes, et non reportées sur les applications. Il a été testé en 2006 sur des débits de 102 gigaoctets par seconde.Il a aussi permis, en juillet 2011, de battre un record : recenser 10 milliards de fichiers sur un système de stockage en 43 minutes. GPFS proporciona un acceso concurrente de alta velocidad a aplicaciones que se encuentran ejecutando en múltiples nodos de un cluster dando una visión de un disco compartido entre todos ellos. La configuración existente de mayor tamaño superaba los 2000 nodos. Existen versiones de GPFS para sistemas operativos AIX (desde 1998) y Linux (desde 2001). Se incluye como parte de . Desde el inicio, GPFS ha sido aplicado con éxito en multitud de aplicaciones comerciales incluyendo: servicios digitales, redes de análisis y servicios de archivos escalables.
