- Free tekno, also known as tekno, freetekno and hardtek, is the music predominantly played at free parties in Europe. The spelling of the word tekno is made to deliberately differentiate the musical style from that of techno. The music is fast and it can vary between 150 and 185 bpm and is characterised by a pounding repetitive kick drum. Nevertheless, bass drum distortion by clipping is used less often as in the related genre of mainstyle hardcore. Nowadays, some tekno producers also use drum sets that rather sound trancey, since many members of the tekno subculture as well as the psytrance subculture frequently attend the same raves and the two scenes are closely connected. Directement issue du mouvement free party, la tribe reste fortement liée à cette culture et est par conséquent régulièrement pratiquée lors d'évènements festifs alternatifs de ce type, où elle reste très appréciée. Il termine è stato usato negli ultimi anni per accomunare più generi musicali, per lo più derivanti dalla Hardcore, si usa però nel parlato distinguere dalla Techno, musica con BPM più bassi. - Tekno of hardtek is een elektronische muziekstijl die enigszins lijkt op techno en hardcore, vanwege het hoge aantal beats per minute (160-210). Omdat de feesten waar deze stijl gedraaid wordt, vaak gratis of voor een vrijwillige donatie toegankelijk zijn en vanwege het illegale, vrijgemaakte karakter, wordt het ook freetekno genoemd. Het wordt ook weleens "kraaktechno" of "techno met een k" genoemd omdat teknofeesten vaak in kraakpanden gehouden worden. Tekno is vooral een psychedelische variant van hardcore. Het is voortgekomen uit een samensmelting van stijlen waaronder acid house, breakbeats, industrial hardcore, EBM, de psychedelische rock van de jaren 1970 en langslepende composities in de klassieke muziek. De muziekstijl is ontstaan in de eerste helft van de jaren 1990 uit onvrede met het politieke beleid destijds en met aan regels gebonden uitgaansgelegenheden. Meestal worden de feesten waar de muziek gedraaid wordt niet aangegeven in het uitgaanscircuit omdat het kleinschalige underground karakter zo behouden wordt. De feesten (free parties) zijn op wisselende locaties. De bezoekers krijgen de exacte locatie op het laatste moment te horen. Een van de eerste tekno-collectieven was het Britse dat begin jaren 1990 begon met het organiseren van illegale teknofeesten. Door dit rondreizende collectief is ook Teknival ontstaan. In Nederland is vooral het sound system Mononom bekend. (nl)

Muzyka ta jest szybka, energiczna, mająca 170–200 uderzeń na minutę i charakterystyczny głęboki, silny bas wraz z wielobarwnymi rozmaitymi dźwiękami typowymi dla techno. Free tekno czerpało wpływy z takich gatunków jak gabber, jungle i rave. Wykorzystuje w utworach sample z programów telewizyjnych czy filmów. Wraz z rozwojem tej muzyki pojawiły się inne nazwy, takie jak hardtek, spiral tekno, freetek, tribe czy tribetek. Producenci tekno pochodzą z Czech, Francji, Holandii, Wielkiej Brytanii i Włoch.
