About: Fred Lowry

Thomas Frederick Lowry (c. 1836 – 30 August 1863), better known as Fred Lowry, was an Australian bushranger. Born in New South Wales, Lowry was imprisoned at Cockatoo Island in 1858 for horse theft, and soon after his release a few years later, began robbing mail coaches in the Goulburn and Bathurst districts. In January 1863 he escaped from Bathurst Gaol after being apprehended and charged with shooting and wounding a man during an abortive robbery attempt. Lowry briefly rode with the Gardiner-Hall gang, but soon afterwards formed his own gang with John Foley that robbed several mail coaches, including the Mudgee mail robbery in July 1863 which netted £5,700 in bank-notes. The following month, Lowry was fatally shot by police. His purported last words, “Tell ‘em I died game”, have come to
