- Francis Frith (també escrit Frances Frith) (Chesterfield, Derbyshire, 31 d'octubre de 1822 - Canes, França, 25 de febrer de 1898) va ser un fotògraf anglès qua va realitzar gran part de la seva obra fent fotografia de viatge per l'Orient Mitjà i moltes ciutats del Regne Unit. Frith va estudiar a Birmingham, i més tard es va iniciar en els negocis obrint un de compravenda de coberts, deixant-ho el 1850 per iniciar un estudi fotogràfic conegut com a Frith & Hayward a Liverpool. De mica en mica Frith va mostrar un interès per la fotografia, convertint-se en un membre fundador de la el 1853. Frith va vendre les seves empreses el 1855 per dedicar-se completament a la fotografia. Va viatjar a l'Orient Mitjà en tres ocasions, la primera de les quals va ser un viatge a Egipte el 1856, amb càmeres de gran mida (16 "x 20"). - Francis Frith (also spelled Frances Frith, 7 October 1822 – 25 February 1898) was an English photographer of the Middle East and many towns in the United Kingdom.Frith was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, attending Quaker schools at Ackworth and Quaker Camp Hill in Birmingham (c. 1828–1838), before he started in the cutlery business. He suffered a nervous breakdown in 1843, recuperating over the next two years. In 1850 he started a photographic studio in Liverpool, known as Frith & Hayward. A successful grocer, and later, printer, Frith fostered an interest in photography, becoming a founding member of the Liverpool Photographic Society in 1853. Frith sold his companies in 1855 in order to dedicate himself entirely to photography. He journeyed to the Middle East on three occasions, the first of which was a trip to Egypt in 1856 with very large cameras (16" x 20"). He used the collodion process, a major technical achievement in hot and dusty conditions. (en)

Początkowo prowadził sklep spożywczy i drukarnię. W 1850 zainteresował się fotografią i założył w Liverpoolu studio Frith & Hayward. W 1853 był współzałożycielem Liverpool Photographic Society. W latach 1856-1860 odbył trzy podróże na Bliski Wschód i do północnej Afryki, odwiedził m.in. Palestynę, Egipt i Nubię. Plonem tych wypraw był zbiór fotografii miejsc nieznanych jeszcze w Europie, w czasie ostatniej wyprawy Frith dotarł aż do VI. katarakty Nilu. W trakcie podróży musiał rozwiązać poważne problemy techniczne, zdjęcia wykonywane były za pomocą procesu kolodionowego, wiązało to się z koniecznością transportu ciemni i dużej ilości odczynników chemicznych. Po powrocie do Anglii Frith opublikował swój dorobek m.in. wydając albumy i pocztówki. W 1859 założył firmę Francis Frith & Co, która zajęła się masową dystrybucją fotografii, albumów, książek i ilustracji. Początkowo dokumentowana była Wielka Brytania, później zatrudnieni fotograficy dostarczali zdjęć z całego świata m.in. z Chin i Indii. Po śmierci założyciela firmę prowadzili jego potomkowie aż do 1968. Dorobkiem Francis Frith & Co, obejmującym ponad 300 000 negatywów i odbitek zajmuje się obecnie założona w 1976 Francis Frith The Collection. (pl)
