- Francis-André Wollman is a French biologist born on May 5, 1953. He is a research director at the CNRS and works at the Institut de biologie physico-chimique (IBPC) in Paris. He is a member of the French Academy of sciences. His grandparents, Eugène and Elisabeth Wollman, researchers at the Pasteur Institute, were the pioneers of discoveries on phage and lysogeny (André Lwoff's later work earned him the Nobel Prize in 1965). Their work was brutally interrupted in December 1943 following their arrest by the French police and their murder in Auschwitz (a prize from the Academy of Sciences is dedicated to them). His father Elijah Wollman, also a researcher at the Pasteur Institute, of which he was deputy director for many years, was one of the pioneers of bacterial genetics and brought to light the genetic nature of prophecy and the sexuality of bacteria. This last work was done in collaboration with François Jacob, who was awarded the Nobel Prize, also in 1965. (en)

Il est membre de l'Académie des sciences. Ses grands-parents, Eugène et Elisabeth Wollman, chercheurs à l'Institut Pasteur, furent les pionniers de découvertes sur le phage et la lysogénie (des travaux ultérieurs de André Lwoff lui valurent le prix Nobel en 1965). Leurs travaux furent brutalement interrompus en décembre 1943 à la suite de leur arrestation par la police française et leur assassinat à Auschwitz (un prix de l'académie des sciences leur est d'ailleurs dédié). Son père Élie Wollman, également chercheur à l'Institut Pasteur dont il fut le directeur adjoint pendant de longues années, fut l'un des pionniers de la génétique bactérienne et mis à jour la nature génétique du prophage et la sexualité des bactéries. Ce dernier travail fut effectué en collaboration avec François Jacob qui reçut le prix Nobel, également en 1965. (fr)
