- Die Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) ist ein seit 1996 existierendes Standardisierungsgremium, dessen Ziel es ist, eine Kommunikationsgrundlage für heterogene, interagierende Software-Agentensysteme zu schaffen. Allgemein befasst sich die FIPA mit Agentenkommunikation, Agentenmanagement und dem Transport von Agentennachrichten.In der Agentenkommunikation geht es zum Beispiel um Interaktionsprotokolle für die Kommunikation zwischen Agenten und um die Anwendung von Semantiksprachen wie Resource Description Framework (RDF) in Agententechnologien.Der Transport von Agentennachrichten behandelt beispielsweise die Interoperabilität von Agentenarchitekturen mit anderen Netzwerkarchitekturen, z. B. den Austausch von ACL-Nachrichten (Agent Communication Language) mit HTTP- oder WAP-Servern. Das 'Physical' (dt.: physisch) in der Bezeichnung des Gremiums ist eigentlich unpassend, da das Komitee vor allem Spezifikationen für Softwareagentensysteme, zurzeit liegen 25 fertige Standards vor, und nicht z. B. für Roboter veröffentlicht. Mitglieder der FIPA sind Forschungsinstitute, aus Deutschland ist die RWTH Aachen vertreten, und große Firmen aus Europa, Amerika und Asien, u. a. Boeing, Siemens und Toshiba. Die Mitglieder der FIPA haben 2005 dafür gestimmt, sich dem Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) anzuschließen und wurden am 8. Juni 2005 zum elften Mitglied des Standards Committee of the IEEE Computer Society. (de)
- The Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) is a body for developing and setting computer software standards for heterogeneous and interacting agents and agent-based systems. FIPA was founded as a Swiss not-for-profit organization in 1996 with the ambitious goal of defining a full set of standards for both implementing systems within which agents could execute (agent platforms) and specifying how agents themselves should communicate and interoperate in a standard way. Within its lifetime the organization's membership included several academic institutions and a large number of companies including Hewlett Packard, IBM, BT (formerly British Telecom), Sun Microsystems, Fujitsu and many more. A number of standards were proposed, however, despite several agent platforms adopting the "FIPA standard" for agent communication it never succeeded in gaining the commercial support which was originally envisaged. The Swiss organization was dissolved in 2005 and an IEEE standards committee was set up in its place. The most widely adopted of the FIPA standards are the Agent Management and Agent Communication Language (FIPA-ACL) specifications. The name FIPA is somewhat of a misnomer as the "physical agents" with which the body is concerned exist solely in software (and hence have no physical aspect). (en)

FIPA fue fundada como una organización suiza sin ánimo de lucro en 1996 con el ambicioso objetivo de definir un conjunto completo de normas para la implementación de sistemas en los que se puedan ejecutar agentes (plataformas de agentes) y especificación de cómo los propios agentes se deben comunicar e interactuar. A lo largo de sus años de vida, la organización contó entre sus miembros con varias instituciones académicas y un gran número de empresas como Hewlett-Packard, IBM, BT (antiguamente British Telecom), Sun Microsystems, Fujitsu y muchos más. Algunas normas fueron propuestas, sin embargo, aparte de varias plataformas de agentes que adoptaron el "estándar FIPA" para la comunicación de agentes, nunca logró obtener el apoyo comercial que se había previsto. L'organisation fut dissoute en 2005 et remplacée par un comité des standards de l'IEEE. Le plus utilisé des standards de la FIPA est un standard de langage de communication ACL (Agent Communication Language). Tout comme KQML, ce dernier s'appuie sur la théorie des actes de langage : les messages sont des actions ou des actes communicatifs, car ils sont prévus pour effectuer une certaine action en vertu de l'envoi.
