- Fort Clonque ist ein viktorianisches Fort westlich der Kanalinsel Alderney. Es wurde 1855 auf einem Felsen errichtet, der mit der Insel durch einen Damm verbunden ist. Dieser Damm kann bei Flut überspült sein. Das Fort war mit einer Garnison von 50 Mann belegt und mit mehr als zehn Kanonen bewaffnet, meist 68-Pfünder. Obwohl das Fort in einer Zeit errichtet wurde, in der die Stärke der französischen Marine zunehmend Sorgen in Großbritannien schürte, wurde nie eine dieser Kanonen in einem Konflikt abgefeuert. 1929 wurde das Fort außer Dienst gestellt und von der britischen Krone für £ 27 verkauft. Szenen des Films Seagulls Over Sorrento wurden 1953 auf Fort Clonque aufgenommen. Das Fort verfiel zusehends, bis es der Landmark Trust 1966 in seine Verwaltung nahm. - Fort Clonque is a 19th-century coastal fortress in Alderney, in the Bailiwick of Guernsey in the Channel Islands. It was constructed at a time when French naval power was becoming an increasing concern to the British. It is built on a rocky outcrop of land joined to the island by a causeway that can be submerged at high tide. It was manned by fifty men and fortified with up to ten guns, mostly 68-pounders; however, none was ever fired in anger. Scenes from the film Seagulls Over Sorrento were shot at Fort Clonque in 1953. The fort fell into disuse before being rescued by the Landmark Trust in 1966; it now provides comfortable self-catering accommodation for up to thirteen people. (en)
