- Fotbal se na Ostrovních hrách hraje pravidelně od roku 1989, přestože se hrál i na prvním ročníku her v roce 1985. Tehdy se ale jednalo o mládežnickou soutěž týmů do 16 let, který vyhrál tým Frøye. V současnosti je nejúspěšnějším účastníkem Jersey, který má již tři tituly. (cs)

- Football has been a regular event since 1989 at the Island Games, the biennial multi-sports event for island nations, territories and dependencies. A 5-a-side competition for under-16s was held at the inaugural event on the Isle of Man, and the success this minor competition brought to the games meant senior men's football was included on the itinerary for the first time in the Faroe Islands, in 1989. Women's football was included on the games' schedule for the first time in 2001. Over the years, the competition has grown in stature, becoming one of the most important competitions for 'national' teams in non-FIFA football, and has grown from a five-team round robin competition to a 16-team tournament. Football was not included in the 2019 Island Games as hosts Gibraltar do not have enough pitches. As a replacement the 2019 Inter Games Football Tournament was held in Anglesey, and was not officially part of the games. (en)
- Les Jeux des îles sont généralement l'occasion d'une compétition de football qui a lieu tous les deux ans. Les équipes participantes sont membres de l'Association internationale des jeux des îles (IIGA). La majorité des sélections sont issue du continent Européen (19 équipes), quatre d'Amérique et une d'Afrique. Jersey a remporté à 4 reprises le tournoi masculin. Åland et les Îles Féroé ont remporté à trois reprises le tournoi féminin. Un tournoi de football "Inter-Games 2019" s'est déroulé du 15 au 22 juin 2019 à Anglesey, au Pays de Galles. Il a été organisé en raison de l'hôte des Jeux des îles 2019, Gibraltar étant incapable d'organiser un tournoi en raison du manque de terrains. Comme le football est l'un des sports les plus populaires aux jeux, il a été décidé d'organiser les matchs ailleurs, bien que les résultats ne fassent pas officiellement partie de l'histoire des Jeux de l'île. Nella prima edizione sull'Isola di Man fu tenuto un torneo Under-16 di calcio a 5, vinto da Frøya. Il torneo di calcio a 11 è stato ospitato a partire dal 1989, inizialmente come competizione maschile, dal 2001 anche con un torneo femminile. (it)

- Fotboll vid internationella öspelen har varit ett återkommande evenemang sedan 1989. En turnering för damlandslagen inrättades först 2001. Turneringens utformning har varierat från år till år. I den första upplagan deltog fem öar, Anglesey (Wales, Storbritannien), Färöarna, Grönland (båda Danmark), Shetlandsöarna (Skottland, Storbritannien), Åland (Finland), där alla möte alla. 1991 deltog åtta lag, vilka delades upp två grupper som sedan ledde till final- respektive placeringsspel. Bermuda är den enda ö som vunnit både herr- och damtävlingen samma år, vilket skedde 2013 då Bermuda var värd för spelen. (sv)
