- EllaLink is an optical submarine cable linking the European and South American continents with landing points in Sines in Portugal and Fortaleza in Brazil. It has currently the lowest latency (<60 ms round-trip delay time between Portugal and Brazil) on the market. For more than 20 years there was no practical direct data transfer routes between Europe and South America. The only cable linking the two continents was Atlantis-2, which was not used for Internet data transfer due to its limited capacity. One of the project's main goals was to circumvent the United States and its upstream collection as the route connects Europe directly with South America; this man-in-the-middle position gave the US National Security Agency the ability to spy on European and South American communications. It was judged problematic by interested parties to EllaLink. In that regard, then President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff said in 2014 that EllaLink would be central to "ensure the neutrality" of the Internet, showing her wish to block Brazilian Internet traffic from being accessed for United States government activities. The cable was launched 1 June 2021, providing a direct data route between Portugal and Brazil. (en)
- EllaLink (anteriormente EulaLink) é um cabo submarino planejado entre Brasil e Portugal (Sines), com emersões em Cabo Verde, Ilhas Canárias , Madeira e Guiana Francesa. O custo previsto é de US$185 milhões. Atualmente, o único outro cabo que liga a América Latina diretamente à Europa é o cabo Atlantis-2, instalado em 2000, cuja capacidade limitada tem feito com que seja usado quase exclusivamente como link de telefonia. Um dos objetivos do projeto é contornar os Estados Unidos como rota para conexão à Europa, devido ao poder que esta posição de intermediário dá aos EUA para espionar comunicações brasileiras, por meio da Agência de Segurança Nacional. A respeito disto, a então presidente do Brasil, Dilma Rousseff, disse que o EllaLink seria central para "garantir a neutralidade" da Internet, sinalizando seu desejo de blindar o tráfego de internet do Brasil contra a vigilância dos EUA. O EllaLink proverá conexão de 100Gbps; a atual conexão é de apenas 10Gbps. (pt)
