- East Island is a former island, formerly about 11 acres (45,000 m2) in area, one-half mile (800 m) long and 400 feet (120 m) wide. It was the second-largest in the French Frigate Shoals, and one of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, approximately 550 miles (890 km) northwest of Honolulu. It was largely washed away in 2018 by the storm surge from Hurricane Walaka. The remaining portion of the island above sea level consists of a sandy strip approximately 150 feet (46 m) long. The island, a sand and gravel spit that formed part of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, was a habitat for Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles, both of which are endangered species. 96% of Hawaii's green sea turtles nest in the French Frigate Shoals, and over half of those were on East Island. Charles Littnan, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, described the island as "the most important single islet for [green] sea turtle nesting". During WW2 a U.S. Coast Guard radio navigation station was built on East Island and operated from 1944 to 1952. In the 19th century, East Island was sometimes called turtle island. (en)

Constituée de gravier et de sable, d'une superficie d'environ 44 000 m2 (4,4 hectares), l'île a été engloutie lors du passage de l’ (en) en octobre 2018. Âgé de 1000 à 2000 ans, selon les estimations des climatologues de l'université d'Hawaï qui l'étudiaient, elle était le deuxième plus grand îlot du banc de sable de la Frégate française et jouait un rôle important dans la biodiversité locale en abritant des espèces menacées telles que des tortues vertes et des phoques moines. Les scientifiques n'excluent pas la réapparition future de l'île.

Foi em grande parte erodida em 2018 pela maré de tempestade causada pelo Furacão Walaka. A porção remanescente da ilha acima do nível do mar consistem de uma estreita faixa arenosa com mais ou menos com 150 pés (45 m) de comprimento. A ilhota, que faz parte do Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, era habitat para as focas-monge-do-havaí e as tartarugas-verdes, ambas espécies ameaçadas de extinção. 96% das tartarugas-verdes do Havaí nidificam nas French Frigate Shoals, e mais da metade delas estão em East Island. Charles Littnan, da Administração Oceânica e Atmosférica Nacional, descreveu a ilha como o "lugar mais importante para a nidificação das tartarugas-verdes".
