The first pre-production units were built in 2003. Evolution Series locomotives are equipped with either AC or DC traction motors, depending on the customer's preference. All are powered by the GE GEVO engine. The Evolution Series was named as one of the "10 Locomotives That Changed Railroading" by Trains Magazine and was the only locomotive introduced after 1972 to be included in that list. - Les locomotives GE Evolution, surnommées GEVO, sont un ensemble de locomotives diesel construites par GE Transportation à la suite des GE Dash 9 et GE AC4400CW qui n'étaient pas conformes aux nouvelles normes de l'Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Cette agence fédérale a en effet mis en place le niveau 2 (Tier 2) d'émissions de CO2 et de polluants pour les locomotives neuves, qui a pris effet en 2005, puis le niveau 3 instauré fin 2011. Les locomotives de pré-série ont été construites à partir de 2003. Les locomotives GE Evolution sont équipées de fonctionnant au courant continu (DC) ou au courant alternatif (AC), selon les préférences du client. Le tout est alimenté par le nouveau moteur GE GEVO à 12 cylindres.
