- Dion M. Martinez (* 26. Juni 1837; † 11. März 1928) war ein kubanisch-amerikanischer Schachmeister. Er wurde als einer der stärksten Schachspieler in Philadelphia angesehen. Dort spielte er einige Partien gegen James Mason (4:5 1874 und 3:1 1875), Wilhelm Steinitz (0:7 im November 1882, 2,5:4,5 im Dezember 1882 und 1:10 1883) und Johannes Zukertort (3,5:9,5 1884). Er wurde geteilter 17.–18. in New York 1889 (Sixth American CC, Miksa Weiß und Michail Iwanowitsch Tschigorin gewannen). Ein Porträt von ihm (zusammen mit anderen Teilnehmern des Turniers) wurde auf Seite 8 der New York Times am 16. Juni 1889 unter dem Titel The Chessboard Kings (Die Schachbrettkönige) veröffentlicht. There he played several matches against James Mason (4 : 5 in 1874 and 3 : 1 in 1875), Wilhelm Steinitz (0 : 7 in November 1882, 2.5 : 4.5 in December 1882, and 1 : 10 in 1883), and Johannes Zukertort (3.5 : 9.5 in 1884). He took 9th at Philadelphia 1876 (Fourth American Chess Congress, Mason won), and tied for 17-18th at New York 1889 (Sixth American CC, Max Weiss and Mikhail Chigorin won). The New York Times of 16 June 1889 describes him as "Dion Martinez of Philadelphia is rather an elderly gentleman, tall and dignified. He was regarded as one of the strongest chessplayers in Philadelphia, but has not practiced much for two years past, and financial adversities have tended to detract his mind from the game.". (en)

Negli anni 1870 emigrò negli Stati Uniti stabilendosi a Filadelfia, dove nel 1885 diventò il primo presidente del Franklin Chess Club. Disputò diversi match a Filadelfia. Nel 1874 contro James Mason (perdette 4–5), nel 1875 vinse 3–1 sempre contro James Mason, nel 1882 contro Wilhelm Steinitz (perdette 0–7), nel 1884 contro Johannes Zukertort (perdette 3,5–9,5). Partecipò a due Congressi degli Stati Uniti:
* nel 1876 a Filadelfia (4th American Chess Congress) si classificò al nono posto (vinse James Mason)
