- Περιγραφικά βοτανολογικά ονόματα είναι ονόματα που διέπονται από το Άρθρο 16 του (ΔΚΒΟ), που ορίζει ότι ονόματα ταξινομικών μονάδων που έχουν βαθμίδα πάνω από αυτήν της οικογένειας, μπορούν:
* Είτε να είναι περιγραφικά
* Είτε να σχηματίζονται από το όνομα αντιπροσωπευτικής οικογένειας που συμπεριλαμβάνουν. Αυτό οδήγει σε ονόματα όπως Μαγνολιόφυτα και Μαγνολιόψιδα. Τα περιγραφικά βοτανολογικά ονόματα τείνουν να εκλείψουν, αλλά πολλά από αυτά χρησιμοποιούνται ακόμη, όπως Φυτά (Plantae), Βρύα (Musci), Μύκητες (Fungi), (Embryophyta), Τραχειόφυτα (Tracheophyta), Σπερματόφυτα (Spermatophyta), Γυμνόσπερμα (Gymnospermae), Κωνοφόρα (Coniferae), Αγγειόσπερμα (Angiospermae), Μονοκοτυλήδονα (Monocotyledones), Δικοτυλήδονα (Dicotyledones). Περιγραφικά ονόματα όπως τα πιο πάνω έχουν μια μακροχρόνια ιστορία, που συχνά αρχίζει πριν την εποχή του Κάρολου Λινναίου. (el)
