Barber was knighted in the 1984 Birthday Honours and was created a life peer as Baron Barber of Tewkesbury, of Gotherington in the County of Gloucestershire, on 12 August 1992. He was a crossbench member of the House of Lords until his retirement on 25 March 2016. Hansard for 22 November 2017 announced that he had died the day before. He was 99. (en)
