- Crystal Ball (englisch für Glaskugel) ist das 20. Studioalbum des US-amerikanischen Musikers Prince. Es erschien am 29. Januar 1998 als CD-Dreifachalbum bei seinem Musiklabel NPG Records und konnte anfangs nur telefonisch per Mailorder oder online über seine damalige Website in einem Boxset mit seinem 21. Studioalbum The Truth und der Bonus-CD Kamasutra käuflich erworben werden. Ende Februar 1998 erschien Crystal Ball mit The Truth aber ohne Kamasutra als Vierfachalbum, das nach Prince’ Tod im Jahr 2016 heruntergeladen werden kann. Das Dreifachalbum ist das vierte Album, das Prince unter seinem Pseudonym des unaussprechbaren Symbols herausbrachte und enthält 30 Songs, die er bereits in den Jahren 1983 bis 1996 aufgenommen hatte. Die Musik zählt zu den Genres Contemporary R&B, Funk, Pop, Rockmusik und Soul, die Liedtexte handeln vorwiegend von Liebe, Sex und zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen. Als Gäste wirken Carmen Electra, Clare Fischer, Jill Jones, Mayte Garcia, Morris Day von The Time, Nona Gaye, Shock G, Susannah Melvoin, Wendy Melvoin sowie ehemalige Mitglieder von The New Power Generation mit. Prince’ frühere Begleitband The Revolution ist auf dem Album nicht vertreten. Musikkritiker bewerteten Crystal Ball unterschiedlich; zwar wurden die verschiedenen Musikstile gelobt, dennoch meinten einige, Prince hätte stärkere Songs auswählen können. Nennenswerte Musikpromotion veranstaltete er nicht und nach seinen eigenen Angaben verkaufte sich das Album weltweit 250.000 Mal, wobei er 80 % bis 95 % des Gewinns behalten habe, anstatt der damals üblichen 20 % bei Warner Bros. It includes , the artist's 21st studio album, which is a three-disc set of "previously bootlegged" material, together with a fourth disc, , the twenty-first studio album by Prince. The box set was initially only available through direct orders by phone and internet. The direct order edition included a fifth disc, an instrumental studio album by The NPG Orchestra titled . Shipment of this limited edition 5-CD version started on January 29, 1998, approximately two months before the release of the 4-CD version to retail stores on March 21, 1998. The album Crystal Ball is Prince's second triple album in succession, following Emancipation. Each of the three CDs contain ten tracks and last fifty minutes, resembling Emancipation's 12-song, sixty-minute disc lengths. In 2018, NPG Records released Crystal Ball and The Truth digitally on Spotify, iTunes, Tidal, and Apple Music. In 2021, a special limited vinyl edition of The Truth was released on Record Store Day.
