- Cryptothecia es un género de hongos liquenizados en la familia Arthoniaceae. De apariencia blanca a verdosa crostosa que crece sobre corteza, madera u hojas en zonas tropicales o subtropicales de todo el mundo. Posee un conspicuo que se desarrolla en su periferia, el cual en algunas especies es color rojo intenso. Su cuerpo vegetativo (talo) carece de córtex (denominado ecorticado y a menudo se encuentra inmerso en el sustrato o (esponjoso, como lana cardada). La es blanca, bien definida, y a menudo salpicada con cristales de oxalato de calcio. Las ascomata no se encuentran bien definidas, siendo cojines de micelio blanco suave inmersos un el tejido medular, de allí su nombre griego “krypto” = “esconder” y “theke” = “un contenedor o cubierta”. Según una fuente existen unas 45 especies descritas en este género, y según otra contiene unas 75 especies. Contiene Trentepohlia, un alga verde como fotobionte ). Se han descrito dos especies en América del Norte. Por lo menos una especie, , ha sido utilizada en Brasil para obtener tintura. (es)

It has a conspicuous prothallus that develops around its periphery which can be bright red in some species, hence the common name wreath lichen. The main vegetative body (thallus) lacks a cortex (ecorticate and is often immersed in the substrate or byssoid (whispy, like teased wool). The medulla is white, well defined, and often peppered with calcium oxalate crystals. Ascomata are not well defined, being cushions of soft white mycelium immersed in the medullary tissue, hence the name from the Greek krypto = "to conceal" and theke = "a container or sheath". There are about 45 described species in the genus according to one source, and 75 species according to another. The genus is in the family Arthoniaceae. It contains Trentepohlia, a green alga, as its photobiont partner. Two species have been described in North America. At least one species, Cryptothecia rubrocincta, has been used in Brazil as a source of dye. (en)
