- Connect:Direct—originally named Network Data Mover (NDM)— is a computer software product that transfers files between mainframe computers and/or midrange computers. It was developed for mainframes, with other platforms being added as the product grew. NDM was renamed to Connect:Direct in 1993, following the acquisition of Systems Center, Inc. by Sterling Software. In 1996, Sterling Software executed a public spinoff of a new entity called Sterling Commerce, which consisted of the Communications Software Group (the business unit responsible for marketing the Connect:Direct product and other file transfer products sourced from the pre-1993 Sterling Software (e.g. Connect:Mailbox)) and the Sterling EDI Network business. In 2000, SBC Communications acquired Sterling Commerce and held it until 2010. AT&T merged with SBC effective November 2005. In 2010, IBM completed the purchase of Sterling Commerce from AT&T. (en)

Hauptvorteil von C:D gegenüber den in ihrem Funktionsumfang gleichen Open-Source-Werkzeugen SFTP, SCP und rsync ist nicht nur die Vielfalt nativ unterstützter Plattformen, sondern auch die ausführliche Protokollierung der Transfers auf beiden Seiten und damit die Mandantenfähigkeit. C:D wird stark in der Finanzwelt, der öffentlichen Verwaltung und anderen großen Unternehmen genutzt, bei denen eine Vielzahl Rechner große Mengen an Daten austauschen müssen. C:D ist nicht mit der ähnlich klingenden Peer-to-Peer-Software Direct Connect zu verwechseln. (de)

Nato come prodotto per il mondo mainframe, a cui man mano sono state aggiunte altre piattaforme, facendo così crescere il prodotto, venne ribattezzato Connect:Direct nel 1993 a seguito dell'acquisizione di Systems Center, Inc. da parte di Sterling Software. Tradizionalmente Connect:Direct utilizza il protocollo SNA tramite linee private e dedicate tra le parti che condividono i dati.Nei primi anni '90 è stato aggiunto il supporto al protocollo TCP/IP. Il principale vantaggio rispetto all'FTP è che offre maggiori controlli in termini di affidabilità. Connect:Direct è usato pesantemente all'interno del settore dei servizi finanziari, agenzie governative e altre organizzazioni di grandi dimensioni che hanno un numero maggiore di mainframe e server Linux e Windows.In termini di velocità Connect:Direct è leggermente più veloce dell'FTP, raggiungendo la velocità massima che il collegamento può supportare. Se la CPU è abbastanza potente Connect:Direct dispone di vari metodi di compressione che possono migliorare notevolmente la trasmissione. Connect:Direct, da solo, non è un sistema sicuro di trasferimento file, per questo viene offerto un prodotto aggiuntivo, Connect:Direct Secure+, in questo modo i dati possono essere crittografati in SSL, TLS e STS. Le modalità di trasferimento di Connect:Direct sono due: la modalità binaria (dove non si verifica nessuna transcodifica) e la modalità ASCII/EBCDIC (in quanto i normali server utilizzano la codifica ASCII mentre i mainframe utilizzano la codifica EBCDIC).
