- Das Common ISDN Application Programming Interface (CAPI) ist eine ISDN-konforme standardisierte Programmierschnittstelle. Mit Hilfe der CAPI-Schnittstelle kann Software für die Nutzung von ISDN bereitgestellt werden, ohne dass Kenntnisse der eingesetzten, herstellerspezifischen ISDN-Karte notwendig sind. Entworfen wurde CAPI ab 1989 von deutschen Herstellern (AVM, Systec, Stollmann) zunächst für das nationale ISDN-Protokoll 1TR6, später dann als CAPI 2.0 für das europäische DSS1. Seit 1994 wird CAPI von der CAPI Association e.V. weiterentwickelt. Die Spezifikationen stehen der Öffentlichkeit frei zur Verfügung. Implementierungen gibt es für verschiedene Betriebssysteme wie Linux und Windows. Vom ETSI wurde die CAPI 2.0 zunächst als "Profil B" in den draft ETS 300 325 übernommen und später in das Dokument ETS 300 838: Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN); Harmonized Programmable Communication Interface (HPCI) for ISDN. Ursprünglich wurde CAPI für die Datenübertragung über ISDN entwickelt. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde die Spezifikation für die Nutzung im Bereich der Sprach- und Faxkommunikation erweitert. Bedingt durch den Trend, dass reine Datenübertragung in neuerer Zeit überwiegend über IP-basierende Netze stattfindet, wird CAPI inzwischen auch im Anwendungsbereich der Sprachapplikationen (z. B. Voicemail, IVR, Callcenter, Sprachkonferenzsysteme), für Fax-Server sowie in kombinierten Systemen (UMS) eingesetzt. Die CAPI-Spezifikation umfasst in der aktuellen Version (CAPI 2.0, 5th edition) eine Vielzahl von Signalisierungsprotokollen (D-Kanal-Protokolle), zum Beispiel die in Deutschland gebräuchlichen DSS1. Sie ist im OSI-Schichtenmodell zwischen Schicht 3 und Schicht 4 anzusiedeln, steuert aber nur Schicht 1 bis 3. Neben den gängigen Signalisierungsprotokollen für ISDN gibt es mittlerweile auch CAPI-Spezifikationen für ATM, Bluetooth, GSM und IP-Telefonie (H.323 und SIP), so dass CAPI-Anwendungen auch direkt in den aktuellen Kommunikationsinfrastrukturen verwendet werden können. Spezielle Erweiterungen von CAPI, die auf protokollspezifische Eigenschaften eingehen, sind bereits seit einigen Jahren für ATM definiert. Seit 2006 wird bei der CAPI Association an Spezifikationserweiterungen für IP-Telefonie (z. B. Codec-Aushandlung, erweiterte Adressierungsarten) gearbeitet. (de)
- The Common ISDN Application Programming Interface (short CAPI) is an ISDN-conformant standardized software interface. With the help of CAPI, computer software intended for the use with ISDN can be provided, without knowledge of the deployed, proprietary ISDN card. CAPI was designed from 1989 by German manufacturers (AVM, Systec, Stollmann). Since 1991, CAPI is being developed further by CAPI Association e.V. Implementations exist for different operating systems, including Linux and Microsoft Windows. Through the ETSI, CAPI 2.0 was introduced as standard ETS 300 324 (Profile B). Primarily, CAPI was designed for data transfer over ISDN. The specification has been extended multiple times, thereby it became important to the area of voice and fax communication. Because pure data transfer over IP-based networks is dominant in modern times, CAPI is being used primarily in the scope of voice applications (voice mail, IVR, call center, voice conference systems, etc.), for fax servers and combined systems (UMS). The CAPI Interface in its current release (CAPI 2.0) supports a variety of signaling protocols (D channel protocols), e.g. DSS1 and FTZ 1 TR 6. The interface operates in the OSI model between layer 3 and 4, but only controls layers 1 to 3. Besides popular signaling protocols for ISDN, implementations of CAPI for ATM, GSM and VoIP (H.323 and SIP) exist, thus CAPI applications can be used directly on communications infrastructure. Special extensions for protocol-specific features were defined several years ago for ATM. (en)

- CAPI (ang. Common ISDN Application Programming Interface) – programowy interfejs pomiędzy systemem operacyjnym komputera a urządzeniem ISDN. CAPI występuje w 2 odmianach:
* CAPI 1.1
* CAPI 2.0 Interfejs CAPI 1.1 został opracowany dla stosowanego w Niemczech protokołu sygnalizacyjnego (niem. Technische Richtlinie Nr. 6). Standard CAPI 1.1 opublikowano po raz pierwszy w 1990 roku. Gdy 1TR6 zaczął być zastępowany przez standard , konieczne okazały się zmiany dostosowujące w CAPI. Przykładowo, w adresowaniu urządzeń końcowych numer (niem. Endgeräteauswahlziffer) został zastąpiony przez MSN.Doprowadziło to do powstania CAPI 2.0. CAPI działa na zasadzie wymiany komunikatów pomiędzy sterownikiem urządzenia a programem użytkowym. Format i protokół wymiany komunikatów jest niezależny od systemu operacyjnego. CAPI określa również sposoby realizacji wymiany komunikatów dla wybranych systemów operacyjnych.
