- Cobar ist eine ca. 710 km nordwestlich von Sydney gelegene Kleinstadt im Bundesstaat New South Wales, Australien. Die Stadt war seit den 1860er Jahren geprägt von den Rinder- und Wollfarmen im Umland. In den 1870ern wurde Kupfer entdeckt. Heute ist der wichtigste Arbeitgeber eine Großmine, in der seit 1960 Kupfer abgebaut wird. Außerdem gibt es eine weitere Mine seit 1983, in der Silber und Zink gefördert werden. Zu den Hoch-zeiten gab es noch weitere Minen und die Einwohnerzahl wuchs auf über 10.000. 1920 wurde jedoch eine Mine geschlossen und die Einwohnerzahl sank wieder auf heute 3.369 Einwohner (Stand 2021). Viele alte Gebäude sind aus den glorreichen Zeiten des späten neunzehnten und frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts erhalten geblieben und geben Cobar einen historisch schönes Stadtzentrum an der Hauptstraße, dem Barrier Highway. Bekannt ist auch das Great Western Hotel aus der Kolonialzeit, sowie das neu eröffnete Cobar Museum, das eine Sammlung über die Geschichte der Minen und der Farmer, aber auch eine Ausstellung über die Aborigines zeigt. Cobar besitzt einen kleinen Flughafen und liegt am Barrier Highway. Außerdem ist die Stadt Endbahnhof der Nebenstrecke Dubbo-Nyngan-Cobar. The town is 712 km (442 mi) by road northwest of the state capital, Sydney. It is at the crossroads of the Kidman Way and Barrier Highway. The town and the local government area, the Cobar Shire, are on the eastern edge of the outback. At the 2016 census, the town of Cobar had a population of 3,990. The Shire has a population of approximately 4,700 and an area of 44,065 square kilometres (17,014 sq mi). Many sights of cultural interest can be found in and around Cobar. The town retains much of its colonial 19th-century architecture. The Towsers Huts, 3 km south of town but currently inaccessible to the public, are ruins of very simple colonial dwellings from around 1870. The ancient Aboriginal rock paintings at Mount Grenfell are some of the largest and most important in Australia. The new Cobar Sound Chapel was opened in April 2022. (en)
