- Chirigota is a genre of Spanish choral folksong originating in the Province of Cádiz. The songs are satirical in nature and are performed predominantly in the streets by costumed performers during the annual two week carnival. It has been described as a vehicle for gossip and public comment, especially of a political or moral, and sometimes prurient, nature. Suppressed during the Francoist State until 1948, along with carnival in general, there has been a massive resurgence of the art-form since his death and the re-establishment of democracy. Politicians are often the objects and subjects of the songs. In 2012 an entire repertoire of the chirigota group "Los Gordillos" was devoted to the communist/anarchist mayor of Marinaleda, a utopian village in central Andalucia. The twelve members were dressed as the mayor, Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo, and offered songs about supermarket raids led by him that summer to dramatize the increasing poverty in the countryside. Abestien eta antzerkiaren arteko nahasketa egiten dute, umorea egiteko eta partaideek ondo pasatzeko helburuz. Nagusiki kaleetan zehar abesten da, kopla umoretsuak herriari eskaintzen. Era berean, chirigota edo txirigota deritze talde horiek antzeztu eta kantatutako abestiei. Jatorriz Andaluziakoak izanik, gaur egun Euskal Herrian ere zabaltzen ari dira (Gipuzkoako iparraldeko Errenteria eta Orio herrietan, adibidez); horregatik, gaztelaniazko jatorrizko chirigota idazkeraren ondoan, txirigota idazkera euskaratua ere zabaltzen ari da. Chirigota taldeek kopla errezitatibo eta bakarrizketatuak abestu ohi dituzte. Forma musikal oso sinpleak dituzte: pasodoblea, runba, sevillana, tangotxoa, seguidilla, jota... Doinu eta tradizio horietako batzuk Kanariar Uharteetatik datoz. Hitzak asmatu eta musikarekin bateratu egiten dituzte. Hitzen gaiak askotarikoak izaten dira, gaurkotasunekoak gehienetan, bai politikako bai bihotz-aldizkarietako albisteak oinarri hartuta. Munduko inauteri askotan txirigota lehiaketak egiten dituzte. Nagusiki hiru alderdi balioztatzen dira: jantziak (itxura), ahotsen kalitatea eta hitzen irudimena (umorea). Chirigotaren helburu nagusia parte hartzaileek ondo pasatzea eta entzuleek barre egitea izaten da. Horretarako guztion erreferente diren kontuen kritika satiro-umoristikoak egin ohi dira. (eu)
- La chirigota es una agrupación musical coral de carácter carnavalesco que canta principalmente por las calles ofreciendo coplas humorísticas a la ciudad. También se denomina genéricamente chirigotas a las canciones interpretadas por estas formaciones corales. Las chirigotas son coplillas recitativas y monólogas y poseen unas formas musicales muy simples procedentes del pasodoble, la rumba, el tanguillo, la seguidilla, la jota, la isa canaria, etc. Las letrillas inventadas ad-hoc se acoplan a esta música y tratan de muy diversos temas, centrándose sobre todo en la actualidad, tanto política como de la prensa del corazón. En muchos carnavales del mundo se celebran concursos donde los grupos compiten por diversos premios, valorándose principalmente tres aspectos: el vestuario o presentación, la calidad de las voces y la agudeza de las letras. El objetivo principal de la chirigota es hacer reír al público a través de la crítica satírico-humorística. (es)
