- Carolus Philippus "Carel" van Schaik (born 15 June 1953, Rotterdam) is a Dutch primatologist who since 2004 is professor and director of the Anthropological Institute and Museum at the University of Zürich, Switzerland. Van Schaik studied biology at the University of Utrecht, graduating in 1979. He was a researcher for the Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research until 1984 and finished his doctoral dissertation for the Utrecht University in 1985. After positions at this university and at Princeton University, he became Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Anthropology and Anatomy at Duke University in Durham in 1989. In 2004 he moved to the University of Zurich. In 2007 Van Schaik became a correspondent of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The interest for the monkeys was born toward the seventies, during an expedition to Sumatra beside his wife. Soon after, van Schaik become always more interested to the monkeys that to the plants, and when in the north-western part of Sumatra he comes upon in the marshy region of the Suaq, he finally meets his orangutans. His book Among Orangutans: Red Apes and the Rise of Human Culture tells the story of his discovery of a group of orangutans in northern Sumatra and the challenge their tool use and sociality pose to theories of primatology and the insights they offer into key moments in human evolution. - Carolus Philippus "Carel" van Schaik (geboren 1953) is een Nederlandse primatoloog en sinds 2004 hoogleraar en directeur van het Antropologisch Instituut aan de Universiteit van Zürich, Zwitserland. Van Schaik studeerde in 1979 aan de Universiteit Utrecht af in de biologie. Hij was tot 1984 een onderzoeker voor het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen en promoveerde aan de Universiteit Utrecht in 1985. Na functies bij deze universiteit en bij Princeton-universiteit, werd hij universitair hoofddocent bij de afdeling Biologische antropologie en Anatomie aan Duke University in Durham (Verenigde Staten) in 1989. in 2004 verhuisde hij naar de Universiteit van Zürich. In 2007 werd Van Schaik correspondent bij de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen. Eigenlijk wilde hij niet starten als biologisch antropoloog, maar als botanicus. De belangstelling voor apen ontstond tegen de jaren zeventig, tijdens een expeditie naar Sumatra met zijn vrouw. Kort daarna wordt van Schaik meer geïnteresseerd in apen dan in planten en wanneer hij in het moerassige gebied van Suaq Balimbing in noord-west Sumatra komt, ontmoet hij eindelijk zijn (Sumatraanse) orang-oetans. Zijn boek Among Orangutans: Red Apes and the Rise of Human Culture vertelt het verhaal van zijn ontdekking van een groep van orang-oetans in het noorden van Sumatra en de uitdaging hun gereedschapsgebruik en gemeenschapszin op te nemen in de theorieën van de primatologie en de inzichten die zij bieden in de belangrijkste momenten van de menselijke evolutie. Van Schaik estudou biologia na at the Universidade de Utrecht, graduando-se em 1979. Ele foi pesquisador da Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research até 1984 e completou seu doutorado na Universidade de Utrecht em 1985. Após cargos nesta universidade e em Princeton, ele se tornou professor associado do Departamento de Antropologia Biológica e Anatomia da Universidade Duke em Durham em 1989. Em 2004 ele se mudou para a Universidade de Zurique. Ele não iniciou seus estudos como bioantropólogo, mas como botânico. Se interesse por primatas se iniciou na década de 1970, durante uma expedição para Sumatra, com sua esposa.
