- Cape Poinsett (65°46′S 113°13′E / 65.767°S 113.217°E) is an ice-covered cape in Antarctica, the northern extremity of Budd Coast, from which the coast recedes abruptly to the southeast and southwest. The position of Cape Poinsett correlates closely with the high seaward extremity of "Budd's " as charted in 1840 by the United States Exploring Expedition under Lt. Charles Wilkes. The cape was plotted from air photos taken by USN Operation Highjump, 1946–48, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after Joel R. Poinsett, Secretary of War under President Martin Van Buren, who was instrumental in the compilation and publication of the large number of scientific reports based on the work of the United States Exploring Expedition. - Kap Poinsett ist ein vereistes Kap am nördlichen Ausläufer der Budd-Küste des ostantarktischen Wilkeslands. Westlich und östlich des Kaps fällt der Küstenverlauf stark nach Süden ab. Die Lage des Kaps fällt zusammen mit dem seewärtigen Ende des 1840 im Kartenmaterial der United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) unter Charles Wilkes als Budds’s High Land eingetragenen Küstenabschnitts. Das Kap wurde mittels Luftaufnahmen der United States Navy bei der Operation Highjump (1946–1947) kartiert. Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte das Kap 1955 dem US-amerikanischen Politiker Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779–1851), Kriegsminister unter US-Präsident Martin van Buren und behilflich bei der Zusammenstellung und Veröffentlichung der wissenschaftlichen Berichte der United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) unter der Leitung des US-amerikanischen Polarforschers Charles Wilkes.
