Die Besatzung der RRS Discovery II hatte im Januar 1936 Ellsworth nach seinem antarktischen Transkontinentalflug von der Forschungsbasis Little America nahe der Bucht der Wale aufgenommen und anschließend auf dem Rückweg nach Australien Vermessungen in den Balleny-Inseln durchgeführt.
