- Cairell mac Fiachnai (died 819) was a Dal Fiatach king of Ulaid, which is now Ulster, Ireland. He was the son of Fiachnae mac Áedo Róin (died 789), a previous king. He ruled from 810 to 819. In 809 Cairell challenged his brother Eochaid mac Fiachnai for the throne and defeated him in battle. This challenge had occurred after the high king Áed Oirdnide campaigned against Ulaid and ravaged from the Bann to Strangford Lough. According to the annals Eochaid escaped from the battle and historians assign 810 as his death date. Cairell became King of Ulaid as a result. In 819 Muiredach mac Eochada (died 839) obtained revenge for his father by defeating and slaying Cairell in a skirmish in 819. Viking raids had begun on Ireland (an island off the north Ulaid coast had been attacked in 795) and in 811 the annals record the slaughtering of a group of them by the Ulaid. Cairell's descendants did not hold the kingship of Ulaid which instead descended through his brother Eochaid. However, his descendants were prominent at the royal monastic center at Downpatrick. (en)

W 809 r. arcykról zorganizował kampanię wojenną przeciw Ulaidowi, niszcząc tereny od jeziora Bann do jeziora Strangford. Przyczyną tego najazdu była obraza relikwiarza św. Patryka oraz zabójstwo Dúnchú, zwierzchnika Tulach Léis (Tullylisk, hr. Down), przez Ulsterczyków. Cairell postanowił wykorzystać okazję, by zdobyć tron Ulaidu. Doszło wówczas do wojny domowej. W bitwie pokonał swego brata Eochaida VI, który uciekł. Tenże zmarł w niedługi czas, w 810 r. Dzięki temu Cairell mógł objąć upragnioną władzę nad Ulaidem. Źródła wspominają pod rokiem 811, że doszło do najazdu pogan (wikingów) na wybrzeże Ulsteru. Wówczas mieszkańcy Ulsteru dokonali rzezi pogan. W 819 r. Muiredach mac Eochada postanowił zemscić się za ojca, wydając wojnę stryjowi Cairellowi. W tym celu zapewne, jak sugeruje Księga z Leinsteru, postarał się o pomoc . Dzięki temu wsparciu mógł pokonać i zabić Cairella w bitwie pod Lapast w Carn Cantain. Prawdopodobnie ceną za uzyskane wsparcie wojskowe była umowa z Máel Bressailem mac Ailella, królem Uí Echach Cobo, w sprawie obsady tronu Ulaidu. Bowiem ten objął władzę, a po nim Muiredach. Potomkowie Cairella, ród Uí Chairill, nigdy nie uzyskali tronu Ulaidu. Królewskość przeszła na potomków jego brata Eochaida. Jednak jego potomkowie byli wybitnymi uczonymi w klasztornym centrum królewskim w Downpatrick. Jednym z nich był Muircertach, uczony i historyk. (pl)
