XFS fornisce una API che consente di gestire l'utilizzo di diversi servizi finanziari, indipendentemente dal produttore della periferica. Le specifiche XFS sono regolamentate dal CEN (European Committee for Standardization). Il nome originario della piattaforma era XFS/WOSA (Windows Open Systems Architecture).
