- CEISAL steht für Consejo Europeo de Investigaciones Sociales de América Latina (deutsch Europäischer Rat für Sozialwissenschaftliche Lateinamerikaforschung). Der gemeinnützige und nicht auf Gewinn ausgerichtete Verein besteht aus (Stand 2008) 51 Forschungsinstitutionen und Forschungsvereinigungen aus 19 europäischen Staaten (Belgien, Deutschland, Finnland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien, Niederlande, Österreich, Polen, Portugal, Russland, Schweden, Schweiz, Serbien und Montenegro, Slowakei, Slowenien, Spanien, Tschechien und Ungarn). Ziele von CEISAL sind die engere Zusammenarbeit zwischen den europäischen Forschungsinstitutionen und -vereinigungen zu Lateinamerika sowie mit den entsprechenden Forschungseinrichtungen in Lateinamerika, die Unterstützung und Durchführung von Forschungsarbeiten sowie die Hervorhebung des Beitrags der Sozialwissenschaften für eine bessere Kenntnis des heutigen Lateinamerika. Der Verein wurde 1971 in Westfalen von 24 Institutionen aus zehn europäischen Ländern (acht aus dem kapitalistischen Westen und zwei aus dem sozialistischen Osten) gegründet. Die Teilnahme Polens und Ungarns (sowie der Tschechoslowakei als passiver Gast) war eine bewusste Einbeziehung von Staaten jenseits des Eisernen Vorhangs in Zeiten des Kalten Krieges. Der juristische Sitz von CEISAL ist das Österreichische Lateinamerika-Institut in Wien. (de)
- CEISAL (in Spanish Consejo Europeo de Investigaciones sobre América Latina) is a network of the main institutes and specialised centres in Latin American studies, and national associations of social research on Latin America in Europe. It consists of 51 members representing 19 European countries. It is a plural and critical space for reflection from the different fields in Social Sciences in order to broaden the knowledge of the social, cultural, economic and political realities. CEISAL was founded in 1971 in Westphalia. At that time it was an initiative that tried to bring closer relations between Western and Eastern Europe. Its main objective was to promote academic freedom and the exchange of thought that would contribute to the development of studies on Latin America in Europe. 24 research and teaching institutions from 8 western countries participated in its founding together with other institutes in Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. CEISAL holds annual assemblies. On the occasion of the celebration of the VIII Centenary of the University of Salamanca, it was celebrated in that historic city in 2016, and the General Assembly elected a new Directive Committee. Los objetivos de CEISAL son la colaboración estrecha entre sus miembros, así como con organizaciones e institutos en Latinoamérica, coadyuvar el trabajo investigativo, producir trabajos de investigación, y finalmente destacar el trabajo que la ciencia social hace para entender mejor el desarrollo de la región latinoamericana. CEISAL está compuesta de 51 (hasta el 2008) institutos de investigación, facultades universitarias y otras organizaciones que estudian el quehacer latinoamericano en Bélgica, Alemania, Austria, Finlandia, Francia, Reino Unido, Italia, Croacia, Holanda, Polonia, Rusia, Suecia, Suiza, Serbia y Montenegro, Eslovaquia, España, República Checa y Hungría.
