- Brood II is one of 15 separate broods of Magicicada (periodical cicadas) that appear regularly throughout the northeastern United States. Every 17 years, Brood II tunnels en masse to the surface of the ground, mates, lays eggs, and then dies off over the span of several weeks. Although entomologist C. L. Marlatt published an account in 1907 in which he argued for the existence of 30 broods, over the years a number have been consolidated and only 15 are recognized today as being distinct. Brood II is among the 12 different broods with 17-year cycles. (en)
- Brood II (Brood 2) ist eine Population der „Periodischen Zikaden“ (Magicicada) im Nordosten der USA. Jedes 17. Jahr bohren sich Zikaden der Brood II en masse an die Erdoberfläche, legen Eier und sterben im Verlauf weniger Wochen. Brood II trat zuletzt im Sommer 2013 auf und wird voraussichtlich 2030 und 2047 wieder auftreten. Die 4 cm langen (1,5 in) schwarzen Insekten können weder stechen noch beißen. Sobald sie die Erdoberfläche erreichen, häuten sie sich und hinterlassen die leeren Larvenhäute am Boden. Sie klettern auf Bäume und Büsche, paaren sich und sterben nach ca. zwei Wochen. Es können bis zu einer Million Exemplare pro Hektar (2,5 acres) auftreten. (de)
