The bostanji were mainly responsible for protecting the sultan's palace and its premises. They also guarded the seraglio and rowed the Sultan's barge. Their chief was called the Bostanji-bashi (Turkish: bostancıbaşı), and he had the rank of a pasha. The bostanji at one time numbered 3000, and were united with the janissaries, another Ottoman imperial guard corps, in military duty. In war time their strength was 12,000. I Bostanci erano principalmente responsabili della protezione del palazzo del sultano e suoi annessi. Custodivano anche l'harem e facevano da rematori sulla barca del sultano. Il loro capo era chiamato Bostanji-bashi (dal turco bostancıbaşı), ed aveva il rango di pascià. I bostanci erano 3 000, ed erano uniti con i giannizzeri in servizio militare. In tempo di guerra la loro forza raggiungeva i 12 000 uomini. Dall'inizio del XX secolo il loro numero scese a circa 600. (it)

Основной их задачей была наружная охрана дворца султана. При этом им были приданы полицейские функции. Часть бостанджи являлись придворными слугами, они несли личную охрану султана и исполняли его указания по устранению неугодных. Они имели большое влияние при дворе, часто назначались Великими визирями. Начальник корпуса бостанджи назывался бостанджи-паша́. Менее привилегированные бостанджи занимались и не связанными с охраной работами, нужными двору: заготавливали материалы для постройки дворцов и мечетей, перевозили грузы, трудились на огородах (под Стамбулом, Эдирне и Гелиболу), тушили пожары. В XVII веке численность бостанджи сохранялась в диапазоне от двух до двух с половиной тысяч, из которых 300—400 являлись придворными слугами. (ru)
