- The Biblioburro (The donkey library) is a traveling library that distributes books to patrons from the backs of two donkeys, Alfa and Beto. The program was created in La Gloria, Colombia, by Luis Soriano. The biblioburro operates within the central municipalities of the Department of Magdalena, on Colombia's Caribbean shore. Soriano became fascinated with reading as a child and obtained a college degree in Spanish literature after studying with a professor who visited his village twice a month. A primary school teacher by profession, Soriano developed the idea after witnessing first-hand the power reading had on his students, most of whom had lived through intense life conflicts at a young age. Starting in the late 1990s, Soriano traveled to communities in Colombia's Caribbean Sea hinterlands with a portable library, which began with 70 books. Soriano wrote to Juan Gossaín, a Colombian journalist and writer, after having heard him read excerpts from his novel The Ballad of Maria Abdala on a radio program. Soriano asked Gossaín for a copy of his book to be distributed on the Biblioburro, details that Gossaín broadcast on his radio program. The response created a flood of book donations and Soriano's collection soon expanded to 4,800 volumes. As of November 2009, a library building next to Soriano's house has been completed funded in part by donations from the public, and it opened as the first library in La Gloria. Additional funding is also provided by the director of a community library, located nearly 180 miles (290 km) from the Caribbean shore in Santa Maria, who hired Soriano as a satellite employee in order to share a portion of its US$7,000 annual budget. Children's adventure stories have remained one of the most popular items distributed by the Biblioburros. In addition to encyclopedia volumes, novels, and medical texts, other items distributed by the Biblioburro include Horacio Quiroga's animal fable Anaconda, the Dictionary of the Spanish Language of the Royal Spanish Academy (Diccionario de la lengua española de la Real Academia Española) and a number of Time–Life travel pictorial books. Books lost from the collection include a sex education manual and a copy of Laura Esquivel's 1989 novel Like Water for Chocolate, both of which were not returned by borrowers. A copy of Paulo Coelho's 1990 novel Brida was stolen by bandits, who tied up Soriano after attempting to rob him and discovered he had no money. Colombian documentary filmmaker Carlos Rendón Zipagauta has made a film that tells the story of Soriano and the Biblioburros. In June 2012, Soriano had a leg amputated after an accident involving one of his burros, but as of January 2013 he continued committed to his work. (en)

Das Projekt wurde von Luis Soriano in , Kolumbien ins Leben gerufen. Sorianos Begeisterung für das Lesen begann bereits im Kindesalter. Er erwarb einen Hochschulabschluss in Spanischer Literatur, nachdem er bei einem Professor studiert hatte, der zweimal monatlich sein Dorf besuchte. Als Grundschullehrer entwickelte Soriano die Idee für dieses Projekt, nachdem er erlebt hatte, dass das Lesen von Büchern die Macht hatte, seine Schüler, die einen stärkeren Konflikt durchleben mussten als er selbst dies als Kind erlebt hatte, zu verändern. In den späten 1990er Jahren begann Soriano mit einer tragbaren Bibliothek, die mit 70 Büchern startete, zu den Gemeinden im kolumbianischen Hinterland der Karibik zu reisen. Nachdem Soriano gehört hatte, wie in einem Radioprogramm Auszüge aus dessen Roman The Ballad of Maria Abdala las, schrieb er ihm und bat um eine Ausgabe des Buches für den Biblioburro. Als Reaktion auf die Details, die Gossaín in seinem Radioprogramm daraufhin veröffentlichte, bekam Soriano eine Flut von Bücherspenden. Sorianos Büchersammlung hat sich mittlerweile auf 4.800 Exemplare erweitert. Der Bau eines kleinen Bibliotheksgebäudes, gestiftet von einer lokalen Finanzgesellschaft, ist jedoch wegen fehlender Mittel erst halb fertiggestellt. Soriano erhält auch vom Direktor der Gemeindebibliothek von Santa Marta, das fast 180 Meilen entfernt in der Karibik liegt, Finanzmittel für sein Projekt, indem dieser Soriano als Mitarbeiter eingestellt hat und einen Anteil an seinem jährlichen Budget von 7.000 US-Dollar mit ihm teilt. Abenteuergeschichten für Kinder sind unter den beliebtesten Medien, die vom Biblioburro verteilt werden. Zusätzlich zu Enzyklopädiebänden, Romanen und ärztlichen Texten gehören Horacio Quirogas Tierfabel Anaconda, das Wörterbuch der Spanischen Sprache der Königlichen Spanischen Akademie (Diccionario de la lengua española de la Real Academia Española) und eine Anzahl von Reise-Fotobänden zu den weiteren durch den Biblioburro verteilten Objekten. Zu den für die Sammlung verlorenen Büchern zählen ein Handbuch zur Sexualerziehung und eine Ausgabe vom 1989 erschienenen Roman Bittersüße Schokolade von Laura Esquivel; beide wurden von Benutzern nicht mehr zurückgegeben. Eine Kopie von Paulo Coelhos 1990 erschienenem Roman Brida wurde von Banditen gestohlen, nachdem sie Soriano während eines Raubüberfalls fesselten und herausfanden, dass er kein Geld hatte. Der kolumbianische Dokumentarfilmer Carlos Rendón Zipagauta drehte einen Film, der die Geschichte von Sorano und den Bücher-Eseln erzählt. (de)

Soriano se sintió fascinado por la lectura desde pequeño y se graduó en literatura española con un profesor que visitaba la aldea un par de veces al mes. Ejerciendo como profesor de escuela primaria, se le ocurrió la idea después de observar el poder que tenía la lectura para transformar sus estudiantes, los cuales habían vivido un conflicto más intenso del que él mismo vivió de niño. Empezando a finales de los años 90, Soriano viajaría por las comunidades interiores de la Colombia caribeña con una librería portátil que empezó con 70 libros. Soriano escribió a Juan Gossaín después de oírle leer fragmentos de su novela La Balada de María Abdala en un programa de radio, preguntando por una copia de la novela para ser distribuida a través del Biblioburro. En respuesta Soriano recibió una avalancha de donaciones de libros de la audiencia de ese programa. En 2008 la colección de libros ha llegado a los 4800 volúmenes. La construcción de una pequeña librería financiada por una compañía local está a medio terminar debido a la falta de fondos para completar el proyecto. Soriano también recibe fondos para su proyecto del director de una librería pública en Santa Marta, situada a 290 kilómetros, que lo ha contratado como empleado satélite y comparte con Soriano una porción de los 7000 dólares anuales que tiene asignados. Los libros de aventuras infantiles se han mantenido como los libros más populares entre los distribuidos por los Biblioburros. También distribuye enciclopedias, novelas, textos médicos y relatos como la fábula Anaconda de Horacio Quiroga o también el diccionario de español de la Real Academia Española (RAE). Algunos libros se han perdido como es el caso de una copia de Brida de Paulo Coelho que fue robada por unos bandidos al darse cuenta de que no tenía dinero. El realizador de documentales Carlos Rendón Zipagauta ha estado trabajando en una película que cuenta la historia de Soriano y los Biblioburros. (es)
