- The Benaleka train accident occurred on August 1, 2007 near Benaleka in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 100 people and seriously injuring 128 more. The accident happened in a remote location 220 kilometres (140 mi) northwest of Kananga in West Kasai province at 11 PM local time. The crash was caused by the failure of the train's brakes. Eight cars derailed; many of those killed had been riding on the roofs and were trapped underneath. The driver was able to detach the locomotive and go for help. Many of the injured were carried by bicycle or even on the backs of others to the nearest hospital, six miles away. It is one of the deadliest rail accidents on the African continent. (en)

August 2007 entliefen bei in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo nach einem Bremsversagen die Wagen eines Güterzuges, auf dem zahlreich blinde Passagiere mitfuhren. Mehr als 100 Tote und 220 Verletzte, 128 davon schwer, waren die Folge. Der Zug war auf der der Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo von Ilebo nach Kananga unterwegs, als in einer abgelegenen Gegend bei Benaleka, etwa 220 km nordwestlich von Kananga in der Provinz West-Kasai, gegen 23 Uhr die Bremsen versagten und der Zug ungebremst durch ein Gefälle fuhr. Dabei entgleisten alle acht (nach anderer Quelle: 10) Güterwagen des Zuges, sieben stürzten um und begruben Reisende unter sich. Die Verletzten mussten 12 km zum nächsten Krankenhaus laufen oder wurden dorthin mit Fahrrädern transportiert oder von anderen getragen. Später kam auch medizinisches Personal der Mission de l’Organisation des Nations Unies en République Démocratique du Congo (MONUC) zum Einsatz. Die Lokomotive blieb im Gleis, so dass der Lokomotivführer in der Lage war, weiter zu fahren und Hilfe zu holen. Nach anderer Quelle floh er, um der Rache der Betroffenen zu entgehen. (de)
- L’accident ferroviaire de Kakenge est une catastrophe survenue dans la nuit du 1er au 2 août 2007, lorsqu’un train marchandise de la SNCC a déraillé à Kakenge sur la ligne reliant Ilebo à Kananga au niveau de la rivière dans la province du Kasaï-Occidental en République démocratique du Congo. Selon le bilan provisoire du gouvernement au lendemain de la catastrophe, cet accident a fait près de 100 victimes et plusieurs blessés. Le 4 août, le gouvernement décrète un deuil national de 3 jours du 4 au 6 août. Un bilan fait état de 120 morts. Il s'agit de passagers clandestins. L’accident serait dû à une erreur humaine. (fr)

L'incidente fu causato da un malfunzionamento dei freni del treno, gestito dalla . Otto vagoni del treno deragliarono, ma il macchinista riuscì a staccare la locomotiva dai vagoni e ad aiutare i superstiti.
