The city of Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, is divided into 62 barrios (neighborhoods or districts), each with its own identity, demographic characteristics and activities appropriate to the socio-cultural level of its inhabitants. The outer barrios of Montevideo are largely rural. In a more general usage of the word barrio, some people refer to the biggest large-scale residential complexes of Montevideo as barrios, although they do not appear as such in official lists. Such are the Parque Posadas in Aires Puros, the complexes in Malvin Norte and others.

Els seus aproximadament 1,5 milions d'habitants viuen en diferents barris, cadascun d'ells amb identitat pròpia, ubicació geogràfica i activitats apropiades al nivell sociocultural de la població. En un ús més general del terme, molta gent es refereix a les grans zones residencials com a barris, tot i que oficialment no són pas reconeguts pel govern. Tal és el cas del Parque Posadas al barri d'Aires Puros, i d'Euskal Erría al barri de Malvín Norte, entre altres. Moltes àrees de la ciutat que ara es consideren barris tenien poblacions geogràficament independents, les quals més endavant van ser absorbides per la gran ciutat. Aquest és el cas de Sayago, Pocitos, Carrasco, etcètera. Alguns barris es van formar a partir de zones industrials, com ara Villa del Cerro i Nuevo París. D'altra banda, àrees que abans es consideraven barris van ser incorporades a barris més grans. Aquest és el cas del barri Goes, la major part del qual ha estat incorporada al barri Villa Muñoz, mentre que la resta ara forma part de La Aguada i La Figurita; el barri Arroyo Seco va ser incorporat a Bella Vista, el Barri Borro, Retiro i d'altres. Com a resultat d'això, alguns mapes poden mostrar diferències en el nombre i ordre d'alguns barris. Many areas of the city that are now considered barrios had geographically independent populations that were later absorbed into the growing city. This is the case with Sayago, Pocitos, Carrasco and others. Some barrios grew out of industrial areas, such as Cerro and Nuevo París. Other areas that were considered distinct barrios have been subsumed into larger barrios. Such is the barrio Goes, most of which has been incorporated in Villa Muñoz, while smaller parts of it were incorporated in Aguada and La Figurita, the barrio Arroyo Seco which has been incorporated in Bella Vista, the Barrio Borro, Retiro and others. As a consequence, different maps may show differences in the number and the borders of some barrios.
