- Bare-metal restore is a technique in the field of data recovery and restoration where the backed up data is available in a form that allows one to restore a computer system from "bare metal", i.e. without any requirements as to previously installed software or operating system. Typically, the backed up data includes the necessary operating system, applications and data components to rebuild or restore the backed up system to an entirely separate piece of hardware. In some configurations, the hardware receiving the restore needs to have an identical configuration to the hardware that was the source of the backup, although virtualization techniques and careful planning can enable a bare-metal restore to a hardware configuration different from the original. Disk imaging applications enable bare-metal restores by storing copies (images) of the entire contents of hard disks to networked or other external storage, and then writing those images to other physical disks. The disk image application itself can include an entire operating system, bootable from a live CD or network file server, which contains all the required application code to create and restore the disk images. - Bare-metal restore ist eine Art der Datensicherung, bei der sich alle zur Wiederherstellung benötigten Komponenten wie ein bootbares Live-Betriebssystem, Applikationen oder Metadaten in einer Miniversion auf dem Sicherungsmedium befinden. So ist es möglich, auch auf Systemen, bei denen das Betriebssystem nicht mehr funktioniert oder die gar keines installiert haben, eine Wiederherstellung durchzuführen und innerhalb kürzester Zeit einen arbeitsfähigen Computer aufzusetzen. Es gibt verschiedene Lösungsansätze für solche Backups. Eine Möglichkeit ist es, direkt auf ein bootbares Medium wie CD, DVD, USB-Stick, externe Festplatte zu sichern und von diesem zu booten. Eine andere Möglichkeit besteht darin, ein bootbares Medium nur für den Start zu generieren, welches dann eine Applikation startet, die die effektiven gesicherten Daten von z. B. einem Sicherungsserver wieder herstellt. (de)
- Bare Metal Restore (BMR) est une expression anglaise du monde informatique désignant une technique où les données sont sauvegardées sous une forme telle que l'on peut restaurer un ordinateur "nu" (en anglais : bare), et le faire fonctionner sans aucune installation préalable (système ou logicielle). L'enjeu actuel est de permettre de restaurer très rapidement sur du matériel différent (par exemple d'une machine Dell vers une machine HP, ou autre) et sur des machines virtuelles (VMware, Microsoft-Virtual Server, etc.) en un minimum de temps d'immobilisation. Typiquement les données sauvegardées pour faire du BMR incluent le système d'exploitation nécessaire, les applications et les composants de données permettant de reconstruire ou de restaurer le système sauvegardé sur un matériel entièrement différent. Dans certains cas la machine cible destinée à recevoir la restauration doit disposer du matériel exactement identique à la machine source de la sauvegarde. (fr)
