- Baltasound (or Baltasund) is the largest settlement on the island of Unst in Shetland, Scotland. It comes from the Old Norse man's name Balti (Baltisund). Unst is the most northerly inhabited island in the United Kingdom. The village lies halfway along the island's east coast on a sheltered bay called Balta Sound. Baltasound was formerly the most important herring port in Shetland. In 1902 its catch exceeded that of the Shetland capital Lerwick. The herring trade declined rapidly after 1905 but the physical remains of the herring boom remained long after. Baltasound was the home of the noted Victorian botanist Thomas Edmondston, who was born at Buness House where his uncle, also called Thomas, was the laird. A memorial stone erected outside the house by the elder Thomas Edmondston commemorates scientific studies undertaken there by the French physicist Jean-Baptiste Biot. Baltasound can also lay claim to the most northerly "wood" in the British Isles, although it is not very substantial. (en)

Vanaf 1799 was Baltasound een haven voor walvisvaarders.Vóór 1905 was Baltasound een van de belangrijkste vissersplaatsen wat betreft de haringvangst. In 1902 was deze zelfs groter dan de vangst van de Shetlandse hoofdstad Lerwick. werd in 1959 gebouwd op de fundamenten van de kerk uit 1827. Baltasound heeft het meest noordelijke Britse postkantoor sinds de sluiting in 1999 van het postkantoor in Haroldswick. Baltasound Airport, ook Unst Airport genoemd, dat enkel voor noodgevallen wordt gebruikt, is het meest noordelijk gelegen Britse vliegveld. Het vliegveld ten oosten van het dorp is een voormalige RAF vliegbasis die later als civiel vliegveld tot zijn sluiting in 1996 voor vluchten voor de offshore olieindustrie werd ingezet. Den var då centralhamn för svenska västkustfiskare och i början av 1900-talet byggdes på deras initiativ en svensk kyrka där och en svensk präst var stationerad i Baltasound under fiskesäsongen. The Swedish Kirk som den kallades användes till 1961, med avbrott för en period under andra världskriget då lokalen användes av Royal Navy. Kyrkobyggnaden förstördes på nyårsnatten 1992 i en orkan.
