- The Australian Chess Championship is a tournament organised by the Australian Chess Federation and held every two years. The tournament is largely restricted to Australian chess players, although it is common to allow a small number of strong overseas players to compete. The highest-scoring eligible player (frequently the tournament winner) holds the title of Australian Chess Champion until the next tournament is held. The tournament format is normally a restricted Swiss system, and in case of a tie for first place, a playoff match or tournament is conducted. Since 1971, the Australian Open has been held in the intervening years. This event is open to all players, regardless of nationality, and the winner holds the title of Australian Open Champion. The Australian Junior Championship and Australian Girls Championship are held annually. The Australian Women's Championship was previously organised as a separate tournament but current regulations award the title of Australian Women's Champion to the highest placed Australian female player in the Australian Open (dependent on a minimum number of female entries). È organizzato dalla Federazione australiana degli scacchi (Australian Chess Federation). Gran parte dei partecipanti sono australiani, ma in alcune edizioni sono stati ammessi anche scacchisti di altri paesi. In tal caso il titolo di "campione australiano di scacchi" viene attribuito al giocatore australiano con la migliore classifica. Si gioca normalmente con il sistema svizzero ad inviti. Nel caso in cui due o più giocatori terminano a pari punti viene giocato un play-off di spareggio. Il primo campionato australiano open, a cui possono partecipare entrambi i sessi, si è svolto a Melbourne nel 1885. Il campionato femminile ha avuto inizio nel 1966. Nei primi anni era un torneo a sé stante, ma ultimamente il titolo di "campionessa australiana di scacchi" viene attribuito alla giocatrice con il miglior punteggio nell'"Australian Open", un torneo annuale a cui possono partecipare giocatori di ogni paese. Сейчас звание разыгрывается в круговом турнире. Обычно чемпионаты Австралии проводятся раз в 2 года. Сейчас для проведения таких турниров используется швейцарская система. В случае дележа 1-го места устраивается дополнительное соревнование. С 1971 г. проводится так называемый открытый чемпионат Австралии. Как и основной чемпионат страны, он проводится раз в два года (чемпионат Австралии — по четным годам, открытый чемпионат Австралии — по нечетным). Звание чемпионки Австралии изначально разыгрывалось в отдельном турнире, сейчас это звание присуждается лучшей австралийской шахматистке по итогам открытого чемпионата Австралии.
