Byl synem regionálního vládce Rothesteuse, který rovněž byl podřízený Athanarichovi. Atharid na příkaz Athanaricha sehrál vedoucí úlohu v pronásledování a usmrcení křesťanského světce svatého Sabbase v roce 372. Později se před Huny ukryl společně s Athanarichem do v Karpatech.
