- The University of Illinois Astronomical Observatory, located at 901 S. Mathews Avenue in Urbana, Illinois, on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, was built in 1896, and was designed by Charles A. Gunn. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since November 6, 1986, and on December 20, 1989, was designated a National Historic Landmark. Though none of the astronomical instruments are being used for professional research today, the observatory still contains a 12" Brashear refractor. The observatory played a key role in the development of astronomy as it was home to a key innovation in the area of astronomical photometry. The facility has been directed by such noted scientists as Joel Stebbins and Robert Horace Baker. Erected at the behest of the Illinois General Assembly, the University of Illinois Observatory became important in the development of astronomy due, in large part, to pioneering research by Dr. Stebbins, from 1907 to 1922. Joel Stebbins left the University of Illinois in 1922 but left behind a legacy of discovery that helped alter the face of modern astronomy. The building served the University of Illinois astronomy department from its opening until 1979, when the department moved into a new, larger building to house its growing staff. (en)

Il se trouve sur l’avenue South Matthews à Urbana, dans le comté de Champaign, en Illinois. Inscrit sur le Registre national des lieux historiques le 6 novembre 1986, il a été intégré à la liste des National Historic Landmarks par le Département de l’Intérieur des États-Unis le 20 décembre 1989. L’observatoire contient une lunette astronomique de 300 mm construite par John Alfred Brashear, mais aucun de ses instruments n’est plus utilisé pour la recherche professionnelle aujourd’hui. L’établissement a joué un rôle important dans le développement de l’astronomie car il fut le siège d’une innovation clé dans le domaine de la photométrie astronomique. Il a été dirigé par des scientifiques tels que Joel Stebbins et Robert H. Baker. Érigé en 1896 à la demande de l’Assemblée générale de l’Illinois, l’observatoire de l’université de l’Illinois est devenu important dans le développement de l’astronomie de par les recherches pionnières effectuées par Stebbins de 1907 à 1922. Joel Stebbins a quitté l’université de l’Illinois en 1922 mais avait fait pendant son mandat de directeur des découvertes qui ont aidé à changer le visage de l’astronomie moderne. Le bâtiment est dans une conception traditionnelle d’observatoire, après un plan en T. Le dôme s’élève à 11 mètres de haut. Le bâtiment a été utilisé par le département d’astronomie de l’université de l’Illinois de son inauguration jusqu’en 1979, date où le département a emménagé dans un nouveau bâtiment plus spacieux, afin de loger un personnel grandissant.
