- Nesiotites hidalgo és una musaranya gimnèsica extinta. Abans de l'arribada dels humans, a Mallorca i Menorca hi havia una musaranya autòctona. Fou descrita per Miss Dorothea Minola Bate l'any 1945 amb el nom de Nesiotites hidalgo. Era un insectívor (de la família Soricidae) de mida petita, amb llargària de cap i cos d'uns 6 cm i amb un pes aproximat de 20 g. Com a musaranya, però, era relativament grossa. Se n'han trobat restes fòssils a la Cova de Muleta, la i la , entre d'altres. (ca)
- The Balearic shrew (Nesiotites hidalgo) is an extinct species of shrew from Majorca and Menorca, in the Balearic Islands of Spain, belonging to the endemic genus Nesiotites. It was one of three native land mammals to the Balearic Islands, alongside Myotragus and Hypnomys. Nesotites has been present in the Balearic Islands for over 5 million years since the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene, and is the final and largest chronospecies of the lineage. It was relatively large for a shrew, being estimated to weigh between 20 and 30 grams. Among living shrews it is most closely related to the Himalayan shrew, from which it diverged around 6.44 million years ago and has a probable close relationship with the extinct genus Asoriculus of mainland Europe and Corsica-Sardinia. Inizialmente, questi animali vivevano solamente sull'isola di Maiorca, dove condividevano l'habitat con altri animali come il ghiro gigante e la capra delle caverne Myotragus balearicus; quando, durante l'era glaciale, il livello del mare scese a tal punto che le due isole fossero collegate da un istmo, le specie di Maiorca si mossero fino all'inesplorata Minorca, già abitata da altre specie endemiche (come il lagomorfo gigante di Minorca), che però furono surclassate e si estinsero. Nell'Olocene, con la fine dell'era glaciale e l'innalzamento del livello del mare, le due isole tornarono separate.Questi animali si estinsero in un arco di tempo brevissimo, assieme alla maggior parte della fauna endemica balearica; questa estinzione improvvisa viene fatta coincidere co la colonizzazione delle isole da parte dell'uomo, che, cacciando questi animali ed introducendo predatori e specie competitrici per il cibo (capre, cani, ratti, maiali) ne avrebbe decretato la fine.
