- The Andean marsupial tree frog (Gastrotheca riobambae), also known as the Riobamba marsupial frog or Riobamba pouched frog, is a species of frog in the family Hemiphractidae. It is endemic to Ecuador. The species is confined to the Andes and the inter-Andean valleys, from Imbabura south to Chimborazo. They live in an altitude of 2,200-3,500 meters above sea-level. The Andean marsupial tree frog's habitat varies from the montane forests to the dry rocky hillsides, and from the agave plants to the corn fields. Once a common species, it is threatened by severe habitat loss. Snout–vent length of Gastrotheca riobambae is about 48 mm (1.9 in). It has a broad, depressed body. Skin is smooth above but granulated below. Within this genus, the males transfer the eggs from the female's cloaca to their dorsal pouch till they reach development at the tadpole stage. It takes approximately five to six weeks that the eggs stay in the female's pouch. Once they reach the stage as tadpoles, they continue their development in water, and go through metamorphosis in a few weeks time. Gastrotheca riobambae are sometimes kept as pets. (en)
- La rana marsupial andina (Gastrotheca riobambae) es una especie de anfibio de la familia Amphignathodontidae, endémica de Ecuador. Generalmente de color verde, aunque existe variación de color entre uno y otro individuo, el macho adulto suele medir en promedio aproximadamente 5 cm, la hembra es más grande midiendo 7 cm. Su hábitat natural, entre los 2200 y los 3500 msnm, incluye montanos tropicales o subtropicales secos, zonas de arbustos a gran altitud, praderas tropicales o subtropicales a gran altitud, ríos, marismas de agua dulce, corrientes intermitentes de agua dulce, tierra arable, jardines rurales, áreas urbanas, zonas previamente boscosas ahora muy degradadas, estanques y canals y diques. Está amenazada de extinción por la pérdida de su hábitat natural, sus poblaciones están severamente fragmentadas y reducidas debido al crecimiento urbano en los valles interandinos. La agricultura, ganadería, quema y el uso intensivo de pesticidas, así como, las plantaciones de pino y eucalipto restringen las zonas de vida de esta especie. (es)
