- Das Star-Bicycle, auch American Star Bicycle, war ein amerikanisches Fahrrad mit Trethebelantrieb, das von 1881 bis 1887 in über 5000 Stück produziert wurde. Es ähnelte durch die Kombination eines sehr großen, durch Muskelkraft der Beine angetriebenen Rads mit einem vergleichsweise kleinen passiven Laufrad oberflächlich einem der zur gleichen Zeit populären Hochräder. Anders als beim Hochrad wurde beim Star-Bicycle allerdings nicht das Vorderrad, sondern das Hinterrad angetrieben. Es fuhr also mit dem kleinen Rad voraus. Außerdem nutzte das Star-Bicycle zum Antrieb keine rotierenden Tretkurbeln, sondern Hebel, die mit Muskelkraft nach unten getrieben und durch Federn in die Ausgangslage zurückkehrten. (de)

It was characterized by a small wheel in front to avoid the problem of tipping forward inherent in other high wheelers. A Star bicycle was photographed being ridden down the steps in front of the United States Capitol in 1885 to demonstrate its longitudinal stability, and Star bicycles were used for the sport of bicycle polo in the mid-1880s. Pressey sued Smith in 1887 for royalties. The name "Star" was attributed to the double star arrangement of the spokes. (en)

Se caracterizaba por su rueda delantera pequeña, con la que se evitaba el problema de volcar hacia adelante inherente a otro tipo de biciclos, diseñados con una gran rueda delantera. Un biciclo Star fue fotografiado bajando la escalinata del Capitolio de los Estados Unidos en 1885 para demostrar su estabilidad. Estos biciclos Star también fueron utilizados para el deporte del polo en bicicleta a mediados de la década de 1880. Pressey demandó a Smith en 1887 por los derechos de la patente del biciclo.
