- Alfa de l'Unicorn (α Monocerotis) és un estel de la constel·lació de l'Unicorn, Monoceros, de magnitud aparent +3,94. Lleugerament per sota en lluentor respecte a β Monocerotis, se situa com la segona més brillant de la constel·lació. Situat a 144 anys llum del Sistema Solar, α Monocerotis és un gegant taronja de tipus espectral K0III (també classificat com a G9III segons altres fonts) amb una temperatura superficial de 4815 K. Una lluminositat 60 vegades major que el Sol i un radi 11 vegades major que el radi solar permeten estimar la seva massa en 2,5 masses solars. El seu contingut metàl·lic és un 20 % inferior al del Sol. Amb una edat aproximada de 1400 milions d'anys, fa uns 250 milions d'anys l'hidrogen del seu nucli es va esgotar, i actualment en el seu interior té lloc la fusió nuclear de l'heli. Són moltes les gegants taronges similars visibles a ull nu en el cel nocturn: entre elles, Menkent (θ Centauri) i Nash (γ² Sagittarii) presenten característiques gairebé idèntiques a α Monocerotis. Pòl·lux (β Geminorum), el gegant taronja més proper a la Terra, encara que de temperatura i grandària similar, és un 25 % menys lluminosa que Alfa Monocerotis. (ca)

- Alpha Monocerotis, Latinised from α Monocerotis, is the Bayer designation for the brightest star in the equatorial constellation of Monoceros. It can be viewed with the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 3.94. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 22.07 mas as seen from Earth, it is located 148 light-years away from the Sun. The star is moving away from the Sun with a radial velocity of +10.5 km/s. The stellar classification of G9.5 III-IIIb Fe-0.5 indicates this is an evolved giant star of type G, which means the hydrogen has been depleted at its core and the outer envelope has expanded and cooled. The 'Fe−0.5' notation indicates the spectrum displays a slight underabundance of iron relative to other stars of this temperature. It is a red clump giant, which means it is generating energy through helium fusion at its core. At the age of 1.18 billion years, this yellow-hued star has an estimated two times the mass of the Sun and 10 times the Sun's radius. It is spinning sedately with a rotation period of about 326 days. Ως αστέρας τέταρτου μεγέθους, είναι εύκολα ορατός από την Ελλάδα, τις νύχτες του χειμώνα. Βρίσκεται στο νότιο-νοτιοανατολικό μέρος του αστερισμού του. Ο α Μονόκερω είναι ένας εξελιγμένος κίτρινος γίγαντας αστέρας, δηλαδή το υδρογόνο έχει πρακτικά εξαντληθεί στον πυρήνα του και τα υπερκείμενα στρώματα έχουν διασταλεί και μειώσει τη θερμοκρασία τους. Το σύμβολο «Fe−0.5» στον φασματικό τύπο του υποδεικνύει ότι το φάσμα του εμφανίζει ελαφρά έλλειψη σε σίδηρο σε σχέση με άλλους αστέρες της ίδιας ενεργού θερμοκρασίας. Θεωρείται ότι έχει ήδη αρχίσει να συντήκει ήλιο στον πυρήνα του και σχετικώς σύντομα το χρώμα του θα γίνει πορτοκαλί, έχοντας σήμερα δείκτη χρώματος (B-V) = 1,022. Αν και πολύ πιο γερασμένος αστέρας από τον Ήλιο, ο α Μονόκερω έχει πολύ μικρότερη ηλικία από αυτόν: 1,2 ± 0,4 έναντι 5 δισεκατομμυρίων ετών. Η μικρότερη διάρκεια ζωής του οφείλεται στη μεγαλύτερη μάζα του, που είναι περίπου διπλάσια της ηλιακής, ενώ ο όγκος του είναι χιλιαπλάσιος του όγκου του Ήλιου. Με επιφανειακή θερμοκρασία 4.879 K, έχει απόλυτο μέγεθος που εκτιμάται σε +0,71 συν ή πλην 0,08 mag, δηλαδή έχει απόλυτη λαμπρότητα 39,5 ως 45,5 φορές μεγαλύτερη αυτής του Ήλιου. Ο α Μονόκερω περιστρέφεται γύρω από τον εαυτό του πολύ αργά, μία φορά κάθε 326 ημέρες περίπου. Ο α Μονόκερω απομακρύνεται από τη Γη και το Ηλιακό Σύστημα με ταχύτητα 10,5 χιλιόμετρα ανά δευτερόλεπτο (37.800 χιλιόμετρα την ώρα). (el)
