- Alexander Buchan (* 11. April 1829 in ; † 13. Mai 1907 in Edinburgh) war ein britischer Klimatologe und Meteorologe. Er gilt als Vater der Meteorologie. Bis 1860 hatte man das Prinzip der Isobaren kaum verstanden. Es war bis dahin üblich, die Beobachtung des Luftdrucks als Differenz vom Mittelwert anzugeben. Buchan erkannte, dass es weitaus nützlicher sei, für alle Stationen den Luftdruck auf Meereshöhe zu berechnen und dann die „Punkte zu verbinden“, also Isobaren zu zeichnen, und schuf so die Grundlage heutiger Wetterkarten, auf denen die Lage der Hoch- und Tiefdruckgebiete zu erkennen sind. Ihm zu Ehren ist die Buchan Bay in der Antarktis benannt. 1868 wurde er zum Fellow der Royal Society of Edinburgh gewählt. (de)

Buchan studerade i Edinburgh, blev lärare där och 1860 sekreterare vid skotska meteorologiska sällskapet. Bland hans arbeten kan särskilt nämnas den banbrytande avhandlingen om lufttryckets fördelning och de förhärskande vindriktningarna på jordytan (i "Transactions of the Royal Society", band 25). Han beskrev även lufttryckets dagliga perioder m.m. och utgav en karta över isobarer och isotermer. Hans Handy Book of Meteorology (1867; andra upplagan 1868) översattes och omarbetades delvis av Hugo Hildebrand Hildebrandsson i Uppsala (1874). I Challengerexpeditionens vetenskapliga iakttagelser skrev han Atmospheric Circulation och Oceanic Circulation. Buchan blev 1878 ledamot av Vetenskapssocieteten i Uppsala. (sv)
