- The action of March 1677, also known as the Battle of Tobago, took place on 3 March 1677 between a Dutch fleet under the command of Jacob Binckes and a French squadron commanded by Jean II d'Estrées attempting to recapture the island of Tobago in the West Indies. There was much death and destruction on both sides. One of the Dutch supply ships caught fire and exploded; the fire then quickly spread in the narrow bay causing several warships, among them the French flagship Glorieux, to catch fire and explode in turn which resulted in great loss of life. The French fleet retreated but would make a second attempt to captured Tobago at the end of the year with a much stronger fleet. (en)

- De Eerste Slag bij Tobago was van 3 tot en met 12 maart 1677 een veroveringspoging van de Franse vloot op de Nederlandse kolonie Nieuw Walcheren op Tobago voor de kust van Venezuela, waarbij commandeur Jacob Binckes met hulp van kapitein Roemer Vlacq een strategische overwinning behaalde en de Fransen terugdreef. Bij de aanval verloren de Nederlanders 10 schepen en de Fransen 6. Ook werden 2 Franse schepen buitgemaakt. 1500 Fransen en 300 Nederlanders verloren het leven. Het lagere aantal slachtoffers aan Nederlandse zijde werd vooral veroorzaakt door het feit dat de Nederlandse schepen onderbemand waren als gevolg van ziekten die vooraf aan de slag hun tol hadden geëist. Negen maanden later zou commandeur Binckes bij de (ru:Второе сражение у Тобаго) sneuvelen bij een tweede aanval van een nieuwe Franse vloot. Dnia 20 lutego 1677 francuska eskadra składająca się z 3 okrętów liniowych, 3 fregat, 3 jachtów i 1 brandera pod dowództwem wiceadmirała Jean d’Estréesa popłynęła ku wyspie Tobago. Dowodzący obroną wyspy holenderski admirał Jacob Binckes dysponował 3 okrętami liniowymi, 3 fregatami oraz 3 jachtami (700 ludzi). Dnia 21 lutego Francuzi wysadzili desant liczący 950 ludzi i rozpoczęli ostrzeliwanie fortu. Dnia 3 marca Francuzi przypuścili 2 ataki, zostali jednak odparci tracąc 200 ludzi. W tej sytuacji Jean d’Estrées nakazał swoim ludziom powrót na okręty. Eskadra francuska podpłynęła wówczas do znajdujących się w porcie jednostek holenderskich. W wyniku bitwy, większość okrętów holenderskich została spalona (zginęło 350 Holendrów). Francuzi stracili jeden okręt i 500 ludzi. Dnia 11 marca Francuzi odpłynęli do Francji.

W trakcie bombardowania wybuch pocisku spowodował eksplozję magazynu prochu, w wyniku którego zginął dowódca holenderski Jacob Binckes i kilku oficerów.
