Im Rahmen des Projektes One laptop per child am MIT wird AbiWord als Standardtextverarbeitung des 100-Dollar-Laptops installiert werden. Una delle differenze più significative tra AbiWord ed altri programmi di videoscrittura consiste nel formato dei file usati per salvare i documenti: un documento scritto con AbiWord è salvato come testo leggibile e modificabile con qualsiasi editor di testo. Questo permette di usare gli strumenti che più aggradano per modificare o estrapolare informazioni contenute nei documenti. In tal modo si ha la certezza di poter accedere ai documenti anche in futuro, anche in assenza del programma stesso. Se a questo si aggiunge il fatto che AbiWord è rilasciato con la licenza GNU GPL, non si deve temere di perdere in futuro la possibilità di recuperare il documento stesso.
Infine, AbiWord è completamente gratuito e multipiattaforma, in quanto funziona come programma nativo sotto sistemi operativi quali GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, BeOS, QNX e qualsiasi altro che supporti il sistema d'ambiente GNOME.
