- Aa Rchb.f. 1854, és un gènere d'orquídies Orchidaceae. Les espècies són terrestres i viuen en hàbitats relativament freds, prop de la línia de neu dels Andes i també a Costa Rica; normalment es troben prop de corrents d'aigua. La seva inflorescència és allargada i acaba en una flor blanca no resupinada. La flor atrau dípters. Aquest gènere sovint s'ha inclòs dins el gènere . El 1854, Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach separà el gènere Aa de l'Altensteinia, per incloure-hi dues espècies: Aa argyrolepis i Aa paleacea. Aquest gènere, aparentment, va ser preparat pel seu autor perquè fos el primer de la llista alfabètica, però una altra explicació pot ser que va ser dedicada a Pieter van der Aa, l'impressor del botànic neerlandès Paul Herman de l'obra "Paradisus Batavus". Reichenbach va canviar el nom del gènere a Altensteinia, però el 1912 va tornar a donar-li el nom de Aa. (ca)

- Aa is a genus of plants of the family Orchidaceae. Species in this genus can be found growing terrestrially in cold habitats near the snowline in the Andes and also in Costa Rica; they are usually found close to small streams. The elongated inflorescence grows from a basal rosette of leaves, terminating in a small white non-resupinate flower. This lip is fringed and hood-shaped. The flower gives off a pungent smell that attracts flies. This genus has often been included in the orchid genus Altensteinia. The first scientific description of a species of this genus was made in 1815 by Karl Sigismund Kunth, naming it first Ophrys paleacea Kunth (1806)., and later Altensteinia paleacea. In 1854 Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach separated Aa from Altensteinia, to include two species Aa argyrolepis and Aa paleacea. The genus name apparently was rendered by the author to always appear first in alphabetical listings. Another - disputed - explanation, is that Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach named this genus after Pieter van der Aa; the printer of the Dutch botanist Paul Herman's "Paradisus Batavus". A few years later, Reichenbach reviewed the name of the genus and named it again Altensteinia. Finally in 1912 Rudolf Schlechter switched the name again to Aa, as more species were being discovered making the new name more significant. (en)

- Aa is een plantgeslacht uit de familie van de orchideeën. De orchidee is door Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach vernoemd naar de cartograaf Pieter van der Aa, eveneens drukker van Paul Hermanns boek "Paradisus Batavus". Gezien deze publicatie postuum gebeurde, stond deze benoeming ter discussie. Soorten van dit geslacht groeien op bodems in koude gebieden in de buurt van de sneeuwlijn van de Andes en ook in Costa Rica. Ze worden meestal in de buurt van kleine bergstroompjes aangetroffen. De verlengde bloeiwijze groeit vanuit een rozet van bladen, eindigend in een smalle witte bloem die ondersteboven hangt met de rand bovenaan. Deze rand is omzoomd en hoedgevormd. De bloem geeft een scherpe geur af die vliegen aantrekt. Het geslacht wordt vaak verward met het orchideegeslacht Altensteinia. (nl)
