- A Gay Girl In Damascus was a weblog purportedly by Amina Abdallah Arraf al Omari who was in fact a fictional character and hoax persona created and maintained by American Tom MacMaster. The identity was presented as a Syrian-American blogger, identifying herself as a lesbian, and blogging in support of increased civil and political freedom for Syrians. During the 2011 Syrian uprising, a posting on the blog purportedly by "Amina's" cousin claimed that Amina was abducted on June 6, 2011. This sparked a strong outcry from the LGBT community and was covered widely in mainstream media. In the wake of the reports, questions arose regarding the possibility that Arraf al Omari was an elaborate hoax. On June 7, 2011, author/blogger Liz Henry, Andy Carvin (a journalist with National Public Radio in Washington, D.C.) and others raised doubts about the identity of the blogger. The photos purported to be of her were proven to be a Croatian woman residing in Britain with no relation to Syria, the blog, or the ongoing protests in the country. On June 12, Ali Abunimah and Benjamin Doherty of the website The Electronic Intifada conducted an investigation that pointed to a strong possibility that the identity of Amina was MacMaster, an American living in Edinburgh. Hours later, Tom MacMaster posted on "Amina's" blog and took responsibility for the blog and the false reports of her capture. (en)

Son identité représentait une jeune femme blogueuse d'origine américano-syrienne, se présentant comme lesbienne sur son blog intitulé A Gay Girl In Damascus et luttant pour la liberté politique et civile en Syrie. Lors des manifestations syriennes de 2011, un message, soi-disant envoyé par le « cousin » d'Amina explique que cette dernière aurait été enlevée le 6 juin 2011 ; cette histoire prend alors une forte ampleur au sein de la communauté LGBT et est très largement et internationalement médiatisée. Quelque temps après son prétendu enlèvement, des questions subsistent sur le fait que l'histoire d'Arraf al Omari ne soit qu'une mise en scène. Le 7 juin 2011, Liz Henry, (en) (journaliste au National Public Radio à Washington), et autres doutent de l'identité de la blogueuse. Les photos qu'elle avait publiées d'elle sur son profil correspondaient à une citoyenne croate résidant au Royaume-Uni sans aucune relation avec la Syrie, le blog, ni même les manifestations dans le pays. Le 12 juin, (en) et Benjamin Doherty du site (en) mènent de plus amples recherches sur le personnage d'« Amina » qui semblerait être finalement incarné par MacMaster, un citoyen d'origine américaine résidant à Édimbourg. Quelques heures plus tard, Tom MacMaster publie sur le blog d'« Amina » être responsable d'un canular suivi de diffamations. (fr)

Амина оставляла комментарии о ситуации в Сирии, заметки о своей жизни, а во время восстаний в Сирии в 2011 году сестра Амины рассказала в этом интернет-дневнике о похищении Амины, которая пропала 6 июня 2011 года. Этот дневник привлёк внимание СМИ и вызвал общественный резонанс в США. Многие усомнились в правдивости сообщений в блоге. После расследования, проведенного несколькими блогерами, было выяснено, что автор дневника проживает в Эдинбурге, Шотландия и его имя — Том МакМастер.
