- حريق المدرسة المتوسطة رقم 31 للبنات في مدينة مكة المكرمة. هو حريق أتى على مدرسة داخلية للبنات بها 835 طالبة و55 امرأة في 11 مارس 2002. ذُكر بداية أن سبب الحريق كان تماساً كهربائياً، إلا أن تحقيقاً من قبل السلطات السعودية ذكر أن إحدى أعقاب السجائر قد تسببت في الحريق إثر إلقائها على مجموعة من الورق. أدى الحادث إلى وفاة 15 فتاة سعودية في المدرسة، وإصابة آخرين. - The 2002 Mecca girls' school fire occurred on 11 March 2002 at a girls' school in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and killed people, all young girls. Complaints were made that Saudi Arabia's "religious police", specifically the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, had prevented schoolgirls from leaving the burning building and hindered emergency services personnel because the students were not wearing modest clothing. The actions of the religious police were condemned both inside the country and internationally. A Saudi government inquiry concluded that religious educational authorities were responsible for neglecting fire safety of the school, but rejected the accusation that the actions of religious police contributed to the deaths and that they stopped anyone from leaving because of modest clothing. In the aftermath, the General Presidency for Girls’ Education was dissolved and got merged with the Ministry of Education. (en)
- L’incendie d'une école de filles à La Mecque survenu en 2002 a donné lieu à de nombreux commentaires, en Arabie saoudite ou à l'étranger, du fait de l'action en cette occasion de la police religieuse, qui aurait interdit aux jeunes filles de quitter l'établissement en bloquant les portes, entrainant la mort de 15 d'entre elles, et faisant plus de 50 blessées. En effet, l'incendie étant survenu tôt le matin, les jeunes filles n'étaient donc pas vêtues de façon conforme au code vestimentaire islamique (abaya, un long vêtement noir et enveloppant, et tête couverte) ; il convenait par conséquent, a jugé la police religieuse, d'interdire leur vue et leur contact aux hommes de la Défense civile, arrivés sur les lieux pour leur porter assistance. Selon Hanny Megally, Directeur général de la division « Moyen-Orient et Afrique du Nord » de Human Rights Watch : « Des femmes et des jeunes filles ont pu mourir sans raison à cause d'une interprétation extrême des conventions vestimentaires islamiques. Les autorités étatiques qui sont, directement ou indirectement, à l'origine de cette tragédie doivent en répondre. » (fr)
- Bij een brand in een meisjesschool te Mekka kwamen op 11 maart 2002 15 schoolmeisjes om het leven. Er vielen tientallen gewonden. Op de school zaten circa 750 meisjes in de leeftijd van 13 tot 17 jaar. 9 doden waren afkomstig uit Saoedi-Arabië, de overigen kwamen uit Tsjaad, Egypte, Guinee, Niger en Nigeria. (nl)
- Pożar w szkole dla dziewcząt w Mekce – pożar, który wybuchł 11 marca 2002 roku w szkole średniej nr 31 w Mekce. Łącznie zginęło 15 dziewcząt, a 50 odniosło obrażenia. W chwili pożaru w szkole znajdowało się 835 uczennic w wieku od dwunastu do piętnastu lat i 55 nauczycielek. (pl)

Сообщалось, что «исламская религиозная полиция» мешала ученицам покидать горящее здание и мешала спасателям выводить девушек, так как ученицы не носили предписанную исламскими обычаями одежду. Как сказал исполнительный директор отдела прав человека на Ближнем Востоке и в Северной Африке Ханни Мегалли, «женщины и девушки могли бы не погибнуть, если бы не радикальные интерпретации исламского дресс-кода.
