- Der erste WNBA Draft fand am 28. April 1997 in den NBA Entertainment Studios in Secaucus, New Jersey, Vereinigte Staaten statt. Die Auswahlreihenfolge wurde bei einer Lotterie festgelegt. Im Gegensatz zu den späteren Drafts in der Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) wurde dieser in drei Drafts unterteilt. Am 22. Jänner 1997 fand eine Initial Player Allocation statt, wo jeweils zwei Spielerinnen zu den einzelnen Teams per Zufall zugeteilt wurden. Danach fand am 27. Februar 1997 der Elite Draft statt, wo die acht Mannschaften aus einem Talent Pool in zwei Runden jeweils eine Spielerin auswählen konnten. Bei diesem Draft handelte es sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt ausschließlich um Spielerinnen, die in internationalen Profi-Ligen tätig waren. Als letztes fand schließlich am 28. - The 1997 WNBA draft was the inaugural draft held by the WNBA through which teams could select new players from a talent pool of college and professional women's basketball players. Unlike later drafts, this draft was unique because there were three different stages in which teams built their rosters. First on January 22, 1997, the Initial Player Allocation draft took place in which 16 players were assigned to each team in no particular order. The elite draft portion comprised professional women's basketball players who had competed in other leagues, usually international leagues. On February 27, 1997, an elite draft added two more players to each team. On April 28, 1997, the four rounds of the regular WNBA draft took place. Draftees Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson would become the core pieces of the Houston Comets dynasty. (en)
- La draft WNBA 1997 est la première draft de l’histoire de la Women's National Basketball Association. Cette draft est spécifique car elle est constituée de trois différentes étapes permettant de construire les effectifs des équipes. Une première étape a lieu le 22 janvier 1997, avec une sélection au cours de laquelle 16 joueuses sont réparties dans chacune des huit équipes sans ordre particulier. La deuxième étape consiste en une Elite Draft où des joueuses professionnelles en provenance d’autres ligues dans le monde sont choisies. Celle-ci a lieu le 27 février 1997. Enfin, la troisième et dernière étape est la draft régulière qui se tient le 28 avril 1997, en quatre tours, à Secaucus, au New Jersey, dans les studios de NBA Entertainment. На третьем же этапе, 28 апреля, проходил основной драфт, состоявший из четырёх раундов, а под первым номером на нём командой «Хьюстон Кометс» была выбрана 22-летняя Тина Томпсон, форвард из университета Южной Калифорнии. Помимо Томпсон в составе «Кометс» оказались ещё две суперзвезды тех времён, Синтия Купер и Шерил Свупс, триумвират которых помог «Кометс» выиграть четыре первых чемпионата подряд. Всего на этом драфте было выбрано 48 баскетболисток, из них 41 из США и по одной из Франции (Изабелла Фиалковски), Бразилии (Жанет Аркейн), Японии (Микико Хагивара), Китая (Чжэн Хайся), Чехии (Ева Немцова), Великобритании и Италии.
