YaCy (read "ya see") is a free distributed search engine, built on principles of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Each YaCy-peer independently crawls through the Internet, analyses and indexes found web pages and stores indexing results in a common database (so called index) which is shared with other YaCy-peers using principles of P2P networks.

Its core is a computer program written in Java distributed on several hundred computers, as of September 2006, so-called YaCy-peers. Each YaCy-peer independently crawls through the Internet, analyses and indexes found web pages and stores indexing results in a common database (so called index) which is shared with other YaCy-peers using principles of P2P networks. Compared to semi-distributed search engines, the YaCy-network has a decentralised architecture. All YaCy-peers are equal and no central server exists. It can be run either in a crawling mode or as a local proxy server, indexing web pages visited by the person running YaCy on his or her computer. (Several mechanisms are provided to protect user's privacy). Access to the search functions is made by a locally running web server which provides a search box to enter the query and returns results of the search in form of a web page as usual on other search portals and engines The program is released under the GPL license.

Dabei gibt es keinen zentralen Server, sondern alle Teilnehmer daran sind gleichwertig. Jeder Peer-Betreiber kann im YaCy-Netz suchen und (optional) zum Index beitragen. Letzteres indem er einen Webcrawler losschickt oder einfach alle besuchten Seiten über den YaCy-Proxy indexieren lässt. Wenn nun irgendein anderer Peer im YaCy-Netzwerk eine Suche startet, kann er alle von anderen Peers indizierten Seiten finden, die zum Zeitpunkt der Suche online sind. Durch das dezentrale Prinzip ist YaCy resistent gegen Ausfälle. Das Projekt YaCy wurde von Michael Christen im Jahr 2003 gegründet.

Ogni YaCy-peer naviga indipendentemente su Internet, analizza e archivia le pagine web e registra le pagine trovate in un database comune (chiamato indice) condiviso con tutti gli altri YaCy-peers. Lo YaCy network ha un'architettura decentralizzata. Tutti gli YaCy-peers sono uguali e non esiste un server centrale. YaCy gira sia in modalità crawler, o come un server proxy locale, indicizzando le pagine visitate dagli utenti. Svariati meccanismi esistono per tutelare la privacy degli utenti che usano YaCy. L'accesso alla funzione di ricerca ha luogo mediante un web server locale, che fornisce una finestra per l'inserimento della stringa di ricerca, e restituisce i risultati su interfaccia web, in modo analogo agli altri portali e motori di ricerca.

Podstawą jest program napisany w Javie funkcjonujący na kilkuset komputerach (stan na wrzesień 2006), tak zwanych YaCy-peers. Każde YaCy-peer niezależnie przeszukuje internet, analizuje i indeksuje znalezione strony i gromadzi rezultaty indeksowania we wspólnej bazie danych (tak zwanym indeksie) który współdzielony jest z innymi użytkownikami YaCy tak jak w sieciach P2P. W odróżnieniu od częściowo rozproszonych wyszukiwarek sieć YaCy cechuje się zdecentralizowaną architekturą. Wszystkie węzły (YaCy-peers) są równoważne i nie ma żadnego serwera centralnego. Program może funkcjonować albo w trybie crawl albo jako pośrednik sieciowy (proxy) indeksujący odwiedzane przez użytkownika strony (parę różnych mechanizmów broni tu prywatności użytkownika). Dostęp do wyników wyszukiwania zapewniony jest poprzez uruchamiany lokalnie serwer wyszukiwania ze stroną wyszukiwania i polem do wprowadzania zapytań, wyniki przedstawiane są w typowy sposób tak jak na innych stronach czy portalach. Program udostępniany jest na licencji GPL.
